About the Author
Randall W. Jensen, Ph.D., started his career working to improve software productivity at Hughes Aircraft Company’s Space and Communications Group where he developed a pioneering computer model for estimating cost and schedule for any large project, measuring organization capability and quantitatively predicting the productivity impact of management decisions. In 1979, Jensen and Charles Tonies illuminated key software productivity attributes in their book, Software Engineering. Throughout his career Jensen continues his research on productivity leading to his improved computer-based estimating model, which is still used today.

Fabulous book to help managers design their software production environments for maximum productivity.

The first bullet in the goals for this book specifically recognizes the centrality of communication and culture, and translates this awareness into quantitative improvements of organization capability. Seer II is used in the capability computations (spreadsheet) to explain the organization capability calculations and the use of tools to evaluate development cost and schedule. COCOMO estimating tool is mentioned only once outside of the historical context, when comparing the capability definitions. SEER-SEM is mentioned in the same context, not surprising since the book's author developed the SEER-SEM model in the early 1980's. So the book is not a study of COCOMO or SEER parameters.

The Effectiveness Formula and its three attributes: communication, management, and technology focus on issues that have prevented organizations from considering people as the primary source of productivity improvement. The amazing part to me is that the importance of people in this process has been around, and ignored, since the 1920s and 1930s. Also, concepts in the book are applicable to agile software developments, and therefore are not referencing specifically a waterfall model.

Earlier references effectively include important research regarding people oriented factors in productivity and the contributions of "skunk works" organizations and their impact on motivation. Much of this useful material was produced prior to 1990.

The ability to predict the impact of changes in personnel, management style, and the development environment itself made this one of the most important sources I have seen in the last thirty years of software management.

Awesome collection of Sayings.

Chanakya was a master statesman. He has authored these verses several centuries ago and they are still prevalent. What a craftsman he was. I have been reading works by Chanakya and thoroughly impressed by his wisdom. It applies to the whole world. This book has Sanskrit verses and their meanings in english. Explanations are simple and easy to understand. Many look like common sense, but they are organized neatly. These are equivalent to modern Get success in Life, Get your business and country to succeed type of book, but written during 370–283 BC. More than 2200 years ago!

Simple and to the point.

Bought to this book because I was (and I am) interested in the Chanayka Neeti.
The original neetis in Sansrit, their pronunciation in English and the translation is mentioned as well. I read this randomly from whatever interested me (meaning not from start) and found it useful and to the point.. The author has done a good job of translation and selection of the Neetis. He could have made it more interesting though by explaining and linking up some contradictory strategies but for a price of a dollar, this book is worth its price.

Everything that came from Eugene is laden with so much depth of understanding one has to read, re-read, and re-read again multiple more times to really let the depth of some things sink into their proper place of perspective. The Science of Being in 24 Lessons is a task in itself to practice and master, however this book seems to do well at filling in some gaps that the Science of Being may not have fully covered in its needed depth. This book picks up some of those details. I highly suggested book to add to your mental expansion of understanding and certainly a great companion book to the Science of Being in 24 Lessons by Eugene.

About the Author
ERIK BANKS has held senior risk management positions in several global financial institutions. In 2001, Erik joined XL Capitals weather/energy risk management subsidiary, Element Re, as Partner and Chief Risk Officer. Prior to that he spent 13 years at Merrill Lynch, where he was Managing Director of Corporate Risk Management, responsible for the firms risk infrastructure; before that he spent 8 years abroad, managing Merrills credit and market risk teams in London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch in 1988 he was credit officer at Citibank and Manufacturers Hanover in New York. Erik is author of seven other books on risk, emerging markets, derivatives, merchant banking and electronic finance; he is also editor and co-author of a book on weather risk management, and is working on various new financial texts.

Reading this book is one of the best decisions you can make for chaning your work and life

Nick Tasler does a tremendous job delivering on the promise of the book - a simple way to inspire change. Professionally, I present on this topic and it was refreshing to find a framework based on making change by decision and not addition. Everything in the book (case studies, theories, analogies, tools and examples) builds on the concept of how to make the decision to change. Once you do, and have these decision-making strategies in place outlined in the book, change becomes a domino effect. Personally, in the past I've made change a complicated process. Immediately upon reading Tasler's change techniques, I've been able to easily implement them and steer my life in a different direction. I'm on my "90-day sprint" and the ripple effect is amazing. Colleagues and friends hear me rave about this book and I know that you will too!

The Real Tipping Point

I've followed NIck's work on decision making for several years now, and recently had the good fortune of seeing his world-class presentation skills. Nick's scholarship and writing style has always been excellent. With this book, there is a systematic view of how decisions lead to organizational change. The 90-Day Sprint and 90-Day Wait-list is a brilliant concept that I'm going to implement immediately. I also like the idea of a Drivers' Mindset and a Passengers' Mindset. The insight that inspiration comes from unexpected decisions is also helpful. There is plenty to mull over in this tightly written book. A good choice for leaders and change makers.

A party planner to the stars, Tutera presents a semi–how-to entertaining book with guides for celebrating 10 landmark birthdays: the first, fifth, 16th, 25th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 65th, 75th and 100th. Each chapter includes notes and ideas in a variety of categories, which change from chapter to chapter but generally include such entries as "the look," "the texture," "the taste" and "the sound." The 200 color photographs are lush and appealing; the prose is tinged with fabulousness. Many suggestions are fleshed out with step-by-step instructions (e.g., a personalized baby blanket and whitewashed farm tables), but most readers would be better served with more practical information, such as recipes for more recommended menu items—of which there aren't many in this volume. However, Tutera (The Party Planner; A Passion for Parties) includes many recipes for cocktails, such as Lunar Lemon Quencher and Blazing Red Martini, and they're fun, inventive and easy to follow. Even if several—or most—aspects of these parties are over-the-top and often unrealistic, the book is gorgeous and inspiring for anyone hoping to throw unforgettable bashes. (Apr.)

A little bit of wow!

This book has a few really nice ideas and pictures. Good explanation is given to what is used to create these beautiful things. The venues also make all the difference in the way the pictures and ideas are brought to life. I really don't see these ideas looking as sharp & gorgeous done in the average party or hotel banquet room....an upscale & trendy venue would best suit most of these ideas. Make no mistakes... you will WOW your guests. I am a home based planner and have found the ideas very interesting and I add my own flair.

David Tutera offers a variety of suggestions for having birthday parties you won't forget. I bought the book intending to enjoy the notion of really having fun planning a party, or any dinner or gathering with some creativity and glitz. David's stories about his mother's parties when he was growing up remind of the influence those childhood experiences have on adults. His stories about clients he has partied reveal a person with a big heart for those for whom he plans milestone events. If you plan celebrations of any sort or just enjoy looking at the pretty pictures, this book will make you happy.

Not for the traveler

This book is an excellent overview of the Sicilian language/dialect, but it is NOT designed as a "traveler's guide" to the language. The lessons are set up in an "immersion approach", providing the Sicilian dialog and THEN following with an English translation; so, it is a little hard to get started. But, once begun, the progress flows quickly and an elemental grasp of the language soon follows. It is not full of "traveler phrases", but the understanding the reader gains from study of the book should provide ample capability regardless of their original intent.

This book gives a good introduction to the Sicilian language

This book is not your typical language instruction book. It has a brief description of customs and culture, which is nice. However, the chapters often repeat themselves, so it could have been better organized into chapters that have distinct lessons and progressively get more complex (like most language books). This book stays at a fairly basic level throughout, however, it accomplishes its purpose, which is to give a taste of Sicilian.

Okay introduction to Sicilian

Dr. Privitera does a decent job of introducing basic Sicilian in this book. Each chapter begins with a conversation in Sicilian, followed by the English translation, and then it moves on to the vocabulary used in the chapter. After the vocabulary comes a brief grammar lesson. The conversations are not very creative, and I can't imagine Sicilians actually having conversations like some of the ones used. Like another reviewer said, the chapters are a bit repetitive, but I think that's intended in order to enforce memorization. The only problem I had with book is that there wasn't enough grammar provided. I wish he went into more detail about verbs, and that he had provided some grammar about prepositional contractions. I managed to come to the conclusion on my own that a circumflex signified a contraction, but this was never actually explained. Another problem is that people who don't have a knowledge of Italian might get lost quickly. All in all, however, I've learned quite a bit of Sicilian, and thanks to this book I can now communicate with my Sicilian friends in their own dialect, instead of standard Italian.

A good book for getting to college level

We use this text for the supplemental/academic skills courses we offer at my community college, for those people whose reading skills are rusty for a number of reasons, including having been out of school for a number of years (sometimes as long as four or five decades), not having paid attention in class in high school, or other low-level literacy related reasons.

This book is well organised for a semester-long course that will bring out many of the critical skills necessary for doing college level work. Regardless of the discipline one goes into in college, one will have to do reading - this is as true in the nursing school, the electronics/drafting programmes, the business skills areas as well as those going on to full-fledge four-year and onward college degrees.

The book begins by exploring issues in active learning and vocabulary, some of the key concepts necessary for comprehending easily what one is reading. From there, particular kinds of reading skills are emphasised - looking for the main idea, recognising patterns of organisation and flow, seeing different points of view in the text, and beginning practice with critical thinking and engagement skills.

Within each section, there are readings and essays designed to strengthen the points being emphasised. These come from a wide variety of sources and cover a lot of different topics, so that they are not all about any particular thing, but rather each student will most likely find something of interest along the way. Each section ends with a vocabulary booster piece, and the final chapter is a very useful guide of test-taking techniques and study tips.

I find the articles very interesting, and the questions developed for the various articles enhance my understanding (this despite the fact that I have, by comparison to the target audience for this text, a very advanced degree of reading capability). This is a popular book among the students who come into our tutoring centre; they have questions and need help with the various concepts, but most like the variety of selections. One particular favourite is the essay entitled 'Monkey Love', by James V. McConnell, that gives a brief history of the Harlow experiments with young monkeys and surrogate mother figures. Essays on terrorism, women in history, low-carb pizza, media influences, Malcolm X (and his story about learning to read), and other pieces relevant to our current culture make reading less of a chore and more of a pleasure, which is key to getting students to progress through the material. The pages are colourful and interesting to look at from a graphic/visual standpoint, which also aids in the learning process.

The title 'Bridging the Gap' is very appropriate, given the task is to bridge the gap between high school (however long ago that was for many students) and college-level reading they will shortly encounter after taking this class.

Great information for teachers

Gallagher's book was very helpful for me. She not only gives the reader insight into how we as teachers can teach our students deeper reading skills, but she also gives examples of how to do so; for me, that is a huge plus. The best part about the book was that Gallagher gives lots of different times that deeper reading can be taught. This gives teachers a choice of chapters to read based on what they are trying to accomplish. Also, you can read the chapters separately depending on what you are looking for with no trouble. I would recommend this book for any teacher that is looking to help their students go the extra mile with their comprehension.

Teaching Strategies

This is an important aspect of teaching! "Deeper Reading" is frank and to the point about teaching reading to students. I teach a Criminal Justice course in the Phoenix Union High School District. Reading is an essential integral portion of my teaching and this book provides valuable tips and strategies to get your students involved and intrested in reading deeper into the subject. I've found after using these practices my students are performing better on assesssmnets not only in my classes, but also in their academic classes! Well written!!

Excellent book for any literature or reading teacher.

One can tell that Kelly Gallagher is a master teacher. He has many great ideas for teaching literature and other types of reading passages that cause students to use creative, as well logical thinking. I feel that after being in his class, students will have skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives, having not only the reading skills they need, but also a great desire to read many different kinds of material.
