This book also reviews many of the recent developments in background subtraction paradigm. Recent advances in developing algorithms for background subtraction from moving cameras are described, including motion-compensation-based approaches and motion-segmentation-based approaches.

About the Author
Dr. Elgammal is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey since Fall 2002. Dr. Elgammal is also a member of the Center for Computational Biomedicine Imaging and Modeling (CBIM). His primary research interest is computer vision and machine learning. His research focus includes human activity recognition, human motion analysis, tracking, human identification, and statistical methods for computer vision. Dr. Elgammal received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2006. He has been the principal investigator and co-principal investigator of several research projects in the areas of human motion analysis, gait analysis, tracking, facial expression analysis and scene modeling; funded by NSF and ONR. Dr. Elgammal is a member of the review committee/board in several of the top conferences and journals in the computer vision field and is a senior IEEE member. Dr. Elgammal received his Ph.D. in 2002 and M.Sc. degree in 2000 in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Elgammal received M.Sc. and B.E. degrees in computer science and automatic control from Alexandria University in 1996 and 1993, respectively.

Enthusiasm abounds as he runs from tree to tree, only to find that each one is already inhabited. He enters the world of backyard animals from squirrels to spiders, and hears and sees them playing, too. Finally, in a tree that holds a world just for him, he falls asleep, utterly exhausted. Repetition is cleverly entwined into this rhythmic narrative, such as "On moss-covered rocks, crickets chirp, 'Chirree!'/as I look, look, look for a tree for me." Primitive-style painted images combine with a collage technique, resulting in a look that is similar to the artist's previous work. What is different here is the use of more white space, which emphasizes contrast, makes the words more visible, and adds to a sense of openness. A fine pairing of author and illustrator, resulting in an appealing story.

Rhythmaning

The words flow so melodically and with such varied rhythms, that reading this is like singing a song. Nancy Van Laan, author of the defiantly slangy "Possum Comes a Knockin,'" once again shows her keen sense of sound in this very fun picture book for infants and toddlers. It's a simple story that, in someone else's hands, could have seemed formulaic and predictable. Van Laan, however, turns this into a frolicking poem that begs for dramatic oral expression. You're the conductor here-speed up and slow down your voice, turn the volume up and down, register surprise, disappointment, and delight, as you read this out loud. Sheila White Samton's unique collage-style pictures will also captivate your audience.

The simple story tells of a (briefly seen) boy and his dog looking for a certain tree. Instead, they find trees inhabited by friendly looking animals including frogs, possums (!), grasshoppers, worms, and squirrels. SPOILER: Our heroes eventually find the cozy tree house they were searching for!Nicely produced by Borzoi Books for Knopf, "A Tree for Me" has 28 beautifully illustrated pages. Although a few of the words are difficult (e.g., squirrels, dangling), the repeating words in Van Laan's poem may make this an appropriate book for the beginning reader as well as the small fry hearing it from you.

A joyful book!

I'm a huge fan of Sheila White Sampon's books. Not only do my kids love them, but I adore reading them to my kids. There's a beautiful and simple quality to the words and pictures, and this makes for easy and fun reading and looking. But under her seemingly simple stories and pictures is a mastery that shows her deep understanding of kids and life.
When I ask my kids which book they want me to read, they often pick up one of Sheila White Sampon's. Her books are harmonious and life-affirming. It's my great pleasure to read them often to my kids. Bravo to Ms. Sampon!!

I am an art critic and curator. This book is a delightful poem with incantatory repetitions that kids love. The illustrations are enchanting -- witty, engaging, and wonderfully colored. Samton's images add another layer of meaning to van Laan's amusing rhymes. Both text and illustrations stand up to repeated reading and close looking.

Loved this book.

I loved this book. The author puts you right there. You can close your eyes and envision the sights, smells, and sounds of the Civil War. He puts you inside that Army Hospital and all the pain and horrors that go along with that. You feel those battles on the front lines that these soldiers faced. This is all through the eyes of young soldier Wil Harleck. You agonize with him over his struggles with himself and sometimes his own faith. You are constantly pulling for him and his beloved family he left back home. A true account of the human side of war. I look forward to more books from this author.

I'm not an avid fiction reader, nor do I consider myself a Civil War buff, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story! Steve's passion for the subject and his utilization of the periodic vernacular helped me to hear the southern drawl in Will's voice as he recounted the hardships of wartime duty and joys of personal and spiritual triumphs. I highly recommend! Bravo Steve!

Great book

I'm not much of a civil war fan but Steve's book was very enjoyable read. This was an awesome book. Steve did a great job of crafting this story around the actual events of the civil war. We learn real quick about how bad things were for the soldiers of the south, like running out of supplies and simple things like shoes. Steve did a great job of bringing the characters to life and how the characters grew throughout the book. even if your not a civil war buff you will still enjoy this book! Well done, Steve!

Fun And Fact Filled

Not only is this one amazingly info-packed book, I found it a fascinating and very enjoyable read on many levels, and I wouldn't normally categorize myself as a "gear head" (although I think this book has converted me...). Although the chapter on Vintage Pedals is fascinating, I really appreciated the author's inclusion of an extensive chapter covering Current Pedals too. I agree with his view that "better pedals are being made now than ever before," and the newer effects often don't get their due. If you don't have $500 to spend on a rare, noisy, expensive but occasionally cool sounding box from the late `60s, Guitar Effects Pedals will point you to some alternatives, and will explain why the new options might even be more satisfying. On top of all this, the History, Tech, and Interview chapters are really useful and very entertaining. I have to say, I was a little puzzled - even stunned - by another reviewer's claim that this book "wasn't well written..." Huh? It flows beautifully, tells you what you need to know, and keeps you gripped along the way (then again, I believe that reviewer admits to being a writing teacher - kind of says it all). On top of that, the reviewer makes odd claims that seem to indicate he didn't really read (or understand) the book: he says that the JRC4558 chip isn't covered, but I found tons of info on it in here, and he also seems dismayed that the book didn't teach him how to build effects or something, where I don't find that angle promoted anywhere on the cover or inside, and that's not the stated intention of this book. Overall, I can't imagine packing more information - or a better read - into the pages allotted here, and we all know that no publisher is going to attempt to even print a 1,000-page to-it-all effects book. Ultimately, this is a book that every guitar player, pedalhead or not, would love to have on his or her shelf.

The only bad thing about this book is now I'm scouring eBay and music stores to add to my pedal collection! The CD was super helpful too. Analogman's book is a little more complete but a lot more expensive.

So so good and funny, all ages can appreciate.

Our household didn't think this book would ever be released! My boys (12 & 8) loved the first one and could not wait for the second, it did not disappoint! My 12yo actually read it twice and giggled through it just as hard the second time! So, when can we expect book 3???? (please) My boys like it better than Big Nate even.

Funny, but ultimately disappointing

Niles and Miles are back. This ranking team, known as The Terrible Two, are ready for another year of pranking their school, especially their power-loving principal, Principal Barkin. Unfortunately, one of their pranks leads Principal Barkin to losing his job, and now he's been replaced with a much more stern principal, who is out to shut down all pranking.

I straight-up loved Book 1. It was so fun! I frequently recommend it to my 4th and 5th grade students who are looking for something funny to read, and so far they have all loved it. So my students and I were super excited for Book 2. The first third or so of The Terrible Two Gets Worse totally lived up to my expectations. I Laughed Out Loud on almost every page.

Unfortunately, I have to break the news to them that I didn't end up loving it, and that I'm not sure I'll get a copy for our classroom. Here's why -

The pranks in the first book were elaborate, creative, and harmless. There were awesome diagrams accompanying several, and the authors did a brilliant job of incorporating the cows of Yawnee Valley. The first book was outrageous, and that's why so many of us love it.

This second installment simply doesn't do the same things. The pranks are too typical, easy for kids to duplicate, and far from harmless. They put peppers in people's drinks, pull the fire alarm, and drop someone's pants. I've seen this book referred to by another reviewer as mean-spirited, and I totally agree. To make it worse, there are no cows! And no elaborate diagrams! Where is the creativity? Where is the outrageousness?

Overall, I'm hoping that this is just a Second Book Slump, and that the next installment will revive the potential of Book 1.
