The Ultimate Study Version of the Qur'an
By Debra Dirks
This is the ultimate study version of the Qur'an in the English language. Yahiya Emerick has given us a superlative translation of the Qur'an into a crisp, clear, and easy to read, modern English.

Interspersed throughout the text in a different font for clear differentiation from the Qur'anic text, Emerick provides enlightening vignettes that describe the historical context in which various passages of the Qur'an were revealed and that lead to a much fuller and deeper understanding of the Qur'anic passage under discussion. In addition, over 2,600 footnotes provide a wealth of commentary (tafsir) derived from the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, linguistic considerations involving the Arabic language, Arabic poetry, etc. Also supplementing the text are separate essays providing a biography of Prophet Muhammad, a discussion of how to approach the Qur'an, the ahadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) and their sources, the prophets recognized by Islam, Muhammad's lineage, chronologies regarding the revelation of the Qur'an and the life of Prophet Muhammad, biographies of Muhammad's wives and various of his companions and antagonists, etc.

For any Muslim in America who is not completely fluent in Arabic, for any college student taking a course in Islamic studies or comparative religion, and for anyone who wants a highly readable translation of the Qur'an with in-depth commentary, this is the first and foremost translation that should be gracing their bookshelves.

Superior But Not Perfect
By Thomas S. Barto
Yahiya Emerick dedicated a big part of his life in creating his expounded translation of the Qur'an. The amount of time spent on research is obvious through his elaborate blocks of background information and footnotes. The "Extended Study Edition" is an excellent resource for extensive research for understanding the history behind the verses and how they were perceived at the time of the revelations. Emerick uses many hadiths [teachings of Prophet Muhammed (peace upon him)] and sunnahs [examples from the Prophet's life] to explain aspects surrounding particular verses.

I was pleased that Emerick disproved many myths about Islam; for examples, the myth that Islam forbids music, and the myth that adoption is unislamic. I disagreed with a few of his footnotes, however. I was particularly disappointed that he upheld the myth that, in Paradise, men will have perpetual virgins "only to please our carnal desires, which will be without restriction..." (n 48). Of course, in Paradise we presumably will be perfected, spiritual beings without sexual lusts. (I certainly do not want to go to a Heaven where people are living with the same unrestrained, sexual immorality as they are today.)

The book lacks user-friendliness on one point, which is that the chapter numbers are not at the tops of pages. In other words, if you opened the book at a random page, you would not be able to tell in which chapter you are reading.

Emerick created an above average translation of the meanings of the Qur'an. He has some fault, however, in grammatical skill and poetic use of the English language; therefore, the literary value falls short of excellence. The translation lacks some elegance as Emerick often misses the tone of the original Qur'an. In translation, reflecting tone is just as important as reflecting the meanings. Although the translation is superior to other English translations, it lacks the perfection that the Qur'an deserves. Still, Emerick is to be commended for a thorough and important contribution.

The Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary is a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of their message, this twelve-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors' studies worldwide. The seventy-eight contributors come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. They represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. The Expositor's Bible Commentary uses the New International Version for its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. Each book of the Bible has, in addition to its exposition, an introduction, outline, and bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views. Brief, but good
By R. Thomas
This is a brief commentary, but I think it is a good supplement to a more thorough work. The brevity of it is succinct, to the point. I find this of value because in my work if there are too many thorough works I have to wade through, I might be apt to not use it so much.

I really like the introductory material.

Review of set, not specific volume
By Paul Forster
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. To be fair, I have yet to use this particular volume. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource.

I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 12 volumes in this set. Every portion has been quite helpful, and this is an amazingly simple and inexpensive way to assemble a good library of commentaries on the entire Bible. Obviously the commentaries are not as thorough as one may find in other series, such as the excellent (although not yet quite complete) "New International Commentary on the New Testament" or a similar series. However, for most Christians who teach or lead small groups in their churches, this set can serve as a great resource to get started with, and one that can easily be supplimented with specific volumes that treat a book of the Bible in greater depth as those books are needed. Additionally, this resource can be more useful than a larger volume in situations where one is interested in looking at a few chapters of scripture at a time, or where one just needs to understand what a verse or two might mean. Thanks to the very clear and practical verse by verse organization, it's a terrific tool to do just that.

Also, I will add that (at the time of this writing) it should be possible to buy the entire set for around $150 or less, so I would suggest shopping a bit if you plan to purchase all 12 volumes.

Strongly recommended.

On China, by Henry Kissinger

"Fascinating, shrewd . . . The book deftly traces the rhythms and patterns of Chinese history." —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

In this sweeping and insightful history, Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to a country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. On China illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such pivotal events as the initial encounters between China and tight line modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, and Richard Nixon’s historic trip to Beijing. With a new final chapter on the emerging superpower’s twenty-first-century role in global politics and economics, On China provides historical perspective on Chinese foreign affairs from one of the premier statesmen of our time.

“Fascinating, shrewd… [The book’s] portrait of China is informed by Mr. Kissinger’s intimate firsthand knowledge of several generations of Chinese leaders. The book deftly traces the rhythms and patterns in Chinese history…even as it explicates the philosophical differences that separate it from the United States.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Nobody living can claim greater credit than Mr. Kissinger for America's 1971 opening to Beijing, after more than two decades of estrangement, and for China's subsequent opening to the world. So it's fitting that Mr. Kissinger has now written On China, a fluent, fascinating…book that is part history, part memoir and above all an examination of the premises, methods and aims of Chinese foreign policy.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Fascinating… In On China, statesman Henry Kissinger draws on historical records and 40 years of direct interaction with four generations of Chinese leaders to analyze the link between China’s ancient past and its present day trajectory. In doing so, the man who helped shape modern East-West relations presents an often unsettling, occasionally hopeful and always compelling accounting of what we’re up against.”—The Chicago Sun-Times

“Fascinating… No living American has played a more important role than Henry Kissinger, the former national security adviser and secretary of state, in bringing about the historic rapprochement between the United States and China. … [Kissinger] draw[s] deep insights into China's traumatic encounter with much stronger Western powers.”—The San Francisco Chronicle

“On China, Kissinger's 13th book, blends an incisive strategic analysis of the moves and countermoves of China, the United States and the former Soviet Union with telling vignettes about his meetings with Chinese Communist Party leaders… entertaining.”—The Los Angeles Times

“No one can lay claim to so much influence on the shaping of foreign policy over the past 50 years as Henry Kissinger.”—The Financial Times

“From the eminent elder statesman, an astute appraisal on Chinese diplomacy from ancient times to the fraught present “strategic trust” with the United States. Former Secretary of State Kissinger brings his considerable scholarly knowledge and professional expertise to this chronicle of the complicated evolution and precarious future of Chinese diplomacy with the West. … Sage words and critical perspective lent by a significant participant in historical events.”—Kirkus Reviews

at times very interesting, at times pretentious, often nave
By Mariusz Ozminkowski
The book is worth reading. And yet, a novice to the subject of China, its history, and especially China's foreign relations, should be advised to take Dr. Kissinger's analysis with great caution and skepticism. Kissinger analysis is at times very interesting, at times pretentious, and, unfortunately, very often nave. Of course he "was there," he experienced a great deal of what he describes, and certainly he had studied the subject. But instead of helping his analysis, his own experience stands on the way of objectivity. First, Kissinger is in awe of Mao Zedong. Mao can do no wrong for Kissinger. All Mao's decisions are based on meticulous planning; informed by the millenia of China's culture; and with long term considerations. In Kissinger's view, when Stalin maneuvers in some negotiations, he is conniving and conspiring, but when Mao is doing the same, he is planning, he is thinking, and following ancient Chinese strategy. Historical facts do not sustain that picture. Although Mao clearly was very skillful revolutionary, his behavior was also very erratic and often reckless. Kissinger rarely, if ever, admits that. For example The Great Leap Forward that led to famine and estimated 30-40 million deaths and set China back decades in economic development is barely mentioned by the author. The destructive and humiliating Cultural Revolution is actually presented in a positive light by Kissinger. Maybe he didn't intend the portrayal to be that way, but Kissinger writes about Cultural Revolution as it would be a political and philosophical campaign that simply didn't fulfill Mao's expectations. It was a "titanic struggle." The fact that China's society and culture was almost destroyed doesn't seem to be bothering Kissinger that much. For him Mao is still the "philosopher king," and no, there is no sarcasm in Kissinger's words. Kissinger seems to be impressed by Mao's skillful use of poetry and ancient proverbs, but doesn't see the ignorant, paranoid, and delusional side of the man who was responsible for destructive policies throughout the 50 and 60s. That's why I would argue that Kissinger's portrayal of Mao is nave.

Second, Kissinger has an annoying habit of explaining all in terms of Chinese culture. Obviously, the culture does play an important role, but when all is explained by culture, nothing is. There is a "cultural explanation" for the Chinese being assertive in politics, and there is a "cultural explanation" when they are diffident. When they wait patiently when they are overrun by others, well, that's their culture, they know from thousands of years of history that the tide will turn one day. When they fight and resist, well, there is also some cultural explanation.

Kissinger's analysis gets better the closer he gets to the present times. Although he never abandons his respect for Mao, his description of the reforms under Den Xiaoping beginning in 1978 is fascinating, not so much the fact that China finally began economic expansion, but how difficult and even uncertain the reforms were in the early years. Of course, Kissinger cannot avoid a constant reminder of his own importance throughout all these years. His grandiosity is somewhat annoying (and that's why I said the book is at times pretentious).

Finally, I would argue that the epilogue is the best part of the book: a look into the future of China and U.S.-China relations. In short, I am rather disappointed with the description and analysis of Mao's Years, but satisfied with the later parts of the book. And overall, knowing Henry Kissinger's work and writing, I expected a greater mind.

Kissinger's On China becomes the GO-TO Book for our Generation - Just Extraordinary - FIVE STARS !!!!!!
By Richard of Connecticut
Prior to the publication of this book the definitive resource on China was Jonathan Spence's "In Search of Modern China". Spence the Yale Professor, is still indispensible to a modern understanding of this remarkable country. Now there is a second more up to date source and that is Henry Kissinger. The former Secretary of State who is now 88 years fortunately has taken the time to put together this incredible piece of work that only he could have created.

The book demonstrates the necessity of having lived a very long productive life and generating wisdom capable of distilling his understanding of a country down to a 530 page volume of work. It is as good as any of his previous works (13 with this one) and for my money I now put this book in Kissinger's top three, along with WHITE HOUSE YEARS and DIPLOMACY.

First the MECHANICS of the Book

If you are going to read the hard copy as opposed to digital, you are in for a treat. The font is beautiful, and the paper used to print the volume is delicious. I say this because if you are a heavy reader; you really appreciate turning the pages of beautifully textured pages. I annotate all of my books, writing in margins, in the back on blank pages and just about everywhere, and I love writing on beautiful page that take the ink nicely. This book was crafted professionally as good as it gets.

The ORGANIZATION of On China

The Secretary has made 40 trips to China in his lifetime, enough that he should be the Honorary Ambassador to the country. He is thoroughly infused in the history of China, and he certainly does give you the history. There are 18 chapters plus an epilogue spread over 531 pages. There are 36 pages of footnotes and it is obvious that the Secretary had considerable organizational help with the footnotes which is to be expected.
The first three chapters or 91 pages are devoted to the nation's history and Kissinger gets it right. I have made many trips to China, but I still have problems with the language. When you read any book on China, you will have problems with pronunciation. What I do is quickly scan the book writing down 50 or a 100 names or terms I can't pronounce, and then head for the first Chinese restaurant in town, and ask for help with the words. People love to help, especially when you are taking an interest in their culture and language.

The guts of the book begins on page 91 or Chapter 4 which is Mao's Continuous Revolution. This chapter is superb and superbly written. If you study American China relations, the question that is always stipulated is whether or not America lost China in 1949. Kissinger correctly reminds us that China might never have been ours to lose, so we asking the wrong question.

Mao always believed that the Confucian order had for thousands of years kept China a weak China. Confucius preached HARMONY, and Mao believed that progress could only come from brutal confrontations both in China and with outside adversaries for China to advance. Mao also believed that these confrontations would happen naturally, but if they did not, he was not beyond creating confrontations even if they had to be within the Communist party to kept progress going, as he understood progress.

Chapter 6 which deals with China Confronts Both Superpowers is another section that only Kissinger could have written. It is here that China confronts the Soviet Union creating the Sino-Soviet split, and the United States with the Taiwan Strait Crisis. The chapter is riveting, and will affect and change your understanding of history.

MY ANALYSIS

The book is indispensible. You cannot understand China and modern Asia without having this book under your belt. One would have to be foolish to visit China and not read this book first to truly benefit from such a trip. Mao was famous for the Long March, and this book is a long journey for the reader but it is very rewarding. The Secretary takes us through the Road to Reconciliation in Chapter 8, and then the first encounters with Nixon, himself and the Chinese leadership in Chapter 9.

It is a fascinating portrayal of power meeting power head to head, and the respect that even enemies can hold for each other. It is now generally accepted that only Nixon the hardened right winger could have opened the door to China and brought the American people along with him, because he Nixon was viewed as tough. Perhaps in a decade or two, Harvard will accept what most historians have already accepted.

In Chapter 11 we witness the End of the Mao Era. Zhou Enlai falls and Deng's first return to power begins. Kissinger loves writing about Deng and calls him the indestructible Deng throughout chapter 12. Keep in mind that it was Deng who opened up modern China and began the reforms that were necessary for China to assert itself years later internationally and economically.

For those readers that know very little of China, this book is a whirlwind tour of a country fast gaining hegemony over Asia. You need to read Chapter 13 on the Third Viet Nam to understand how China is capable of dealing with its neighbors. Had we handled Viet Nam this way, the outcome and history would have been different.

CONCLUSION:

Henry Kissinger ON CHINA is destined to become a best seller and in the process will greatly help an America that knows very little about China except for newspapers, to understand not just the history of this vital country, but its future and the nexus of that future with America's future. No one can ignore China, so the sooner we as Americans gain the understanding that we need to make intelligent decisions, the better off we will all be. If you have an interest in China whatsoever, run to read this book, and do not put it down until you are finished with it. Good luck and thank you for reading this review.

Richard C. Stoyeck

ASSIDE:

I will share something extraordinary with you. When you read a book like this, you will have a better understanding of China than 98% of the people living in China and 95% of the Chinese people living in America. I am still shocked when I meet Chinese people in this country young and old who have next to no understanding of Chinese history prior to Mao. They do not know the name Sun Yat-sen, or even Zhou Enlai, and forget about the Cultural Revolution unless they lived through it. Even the tragedy of Tiananmen Square is fast fading from memory.

It reminds me of German history in the post Hitler period. Anybody in Germany who was educated post 1950 has very little to no understanding of the Hitler period. It is simply glossed over as a dark period in German history; the teachers do not know what to say. Just amazing.

Excellent Material from an Excellent Source
By Loyd Eskildson
Dr. Kissinger has had personal experience with four generations of Chinese leaders, as well as building an appreciation of its long history. His "On China" primarily covers China's initial encounters between China and modern European powers, the breakdown of its alliance with Russia, rationale behind and its involvement in the Korean War, and President Nixon's historic trip to Beijing. The book is an attempt to explain differences in how the Chinese both view themselves as an exceptional civilization (cultural; non--applicable to other nations) and think about foreign and military strategy, vs. the U.S. (God-given, with an obligation to spread to others). Most of "On China" consists of a readable, but detailed history of China, along with how those events have shaped its leaders. Kissinger's historical accounting begins with with Confucius, and goes on to also summarize the forced opening of China by Great Britain and other 'barbarians,' Japanese and Russian occupation, Mao's takeover and creation of continual chaos, reclaiming former boundaries (India, Tibet, Inner Mongolia; crises over Taiwan), rationale for Sino-U.S. rapprochement, the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, and China's subsequent healing and economic resurgence initiated and led by Deng Xiaoping.

Early China was plagued by internecine conflict that threatened the empire's sustainability. Confucius (551 B.C.- 479 B.C.), an itinerant philosopher largely ignored in his lifetime, provided the 'glue' that has both kept the empire together since, while uniting its people, and providing much of Asia's 'state religion.' Expertise in Confucian thought became the key to advancement after the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220) adopted Confucius' thinking. In doing so, the State assumed a moral obligation to provide virtue and harmony, and its people took on an obligation to obey the state as well as honor their ancestors and emphasize learning.

Between 1405-1433, China's Admiral Zheng sent out a fleet of large, technically advanced ships to Africa, the Middle East, India, and other closer locales. The fleet's size, number of vessels, and sophistication dwarfed that of the Spanish Armada that was created 150-years later. The purpose of the voyages is unclear to historians, and the next Emperor ordered the fleet destroyed, along with Zheng's records of those voyages. The expeditions were never repeated. More significantly, withdrawal from Western nations limited access to new ideas and led to China being physically and economically dominated by others from the mid-1800s until the 1990s - its 'Century of Humiliation.' (China's share of the world's GDP was about 25% in 1500, grew to approximately 30% in 1820, and fell to about 4% in 1950.) Deng's re-opening China's economy in 1979 brought China back - it is now the world's #2 economy and expected to become #1 in about 15 years, based on purchasing-power parity.

As an aside, Kissinger also notes that China's turbulent history has taught its leaders that not every problem has a solution, and that too great an emphasis on total mastery over specific events could upset world harmony. Important lessons that the U.S. could benefit from.

Keys to understanding China: 1)Confucianism - a single universal standard of conduct and social cohesion. 2)Sun Tzu - outsmarting an opponent = good, conflict = bad. 3)China's recent history of humiliation. 4)Fear of social disorder.

Human-rights activists will not be satisfied with Kissinger's lack of umbrage on human rights in China - especially regarding Mao; realists, however, will recognize that the passage of time, China's rapid economic improvement and Confucian history make the topic much less important to the Chinese. Those more sardonic will simply note that Kissinger's firm does extensive business in China and he does not want to risk that. Kissinger also does not cover China's newly acquired economic power vs. the U.S. via its extensive holding of U.S. debt, our recent loss of respect due to the 'Great Recession' and our loss of manufacturing leadership. Regardless, "On China" is essential reading; it also clearly demonstrates why Dr. Kissinger is renowned among foreign policy experts.

Concise helpful and practical with fully worked examples
By Terry
I acquired this book many years ago, but never read it. (Incidentally, I remember once meeting Mike Fryer briefly too, but that was on a separate occasion, also a very long time ago.) Recently I needed to re-learn/remember how to do linear programming so I could solve an elementary bit of game theory, and remembered this book. It was pitched exactly right! It starts at the beginning and gives a basic but reasonably complete understanding of the practical aspects of solving elementary problems, without getting bogged down. All the examples are worked through, with a complete set of answers to all of the exercises and a few more occasional pointers added as required, - having all of the answers explained in this way was very helpful for working alone. The book makes no pretence of giving a complete theory, and that was OK because I just wanted to know how to do the basics, which is just what the text offers by staying practical and solving problems illustrating various situations that can arise. The necessary bits of basic theory that are explained are usually quite clear, there were only a couple of places where the description seemed a bit lacking and I had to stop and puzzle out for myself just what was going on, and then add a few lines of pencilled explanation in the margin to help myself out the next time round. (That will be when I've forgotten again, and have to look it up once more.)

The book is a first edition from 1978, thirty-five years ago now, and I guess there weren't any more. As such I found it does contain the usual quota of typographical errors, perhaps at least one every other page on average. None of these significantly detracted from the presented material, and in fact spotting and correcting these typos actually helped me in working through the text and the exercises.

In summary: does what the book's title says on the tin, as they say. Succeeds in giving the reader a practical problem solving approach. I'm very pleased to have the book and to have worked through it. And, I was able afterwards to solve my little game theory puzzle that first prompted me to pick the book up. Recommended!

About the Author
Sage has been passionate about books from a very early age on and dreamt of writing one for years while working on the day job instead. It took a very persistent character in the company of a treasured Muse to finally get the first novel going. The fact that he was gay came as a bit of a surprise, but it explained a lot. Ever since, Sage has been the willing slave to all the fascinating guys who just keep queuing up and want their stories told. This has resulted in several manuscripts at various stages of completion, so there's always something to work on - preferably at night when the rest of the house is asleep. Sage's characters often have a dramatic and sometimes traumatic past and need to battle some demons to be with the one they love. It doesn't hurt that they usually get quite a lot of naughty action along the way! Sage loves to hear from readers, so go ahead please…

Loved it!
By Astrid
Another book filled with complex, characters who don't do what you'd expect. Fantastic. I was uncertain the entire way how this was going to play out, the author and his characters kept me guessing. I was ready to throttle Bryan and wanted to have a frank discussion with Dan - giving him lots of cuddles. Highly recommended.

One Click Now!!
By Nicole Colville
Like all of Sage's books, I couldn't wait for this one when it first came out, and I can't believe I didn't leave a review. Every book I read by this author is my favourite, then the next one comes out and that soon becomes my favourite. This one has stuck in my top five books by any author though, which proves how much I love it. These two men are well thought out and deep characters who you fall in love with and want to follow them through their life. Sage's books are always bittersweet, and I love the edge each character has which makes them stand out from so many other characters I read about. There’s mystery, romance, great sex, and it’s all perfectly written.

Captivating from beginning to end
By Louisa Mae
Daniel Eames is appointed to protect a slightly brattish, young movie star who has been receiving letters from a mysterious stalker. His agent has arranged the protection to look after her most valuable asset, but it seems neither of them are happy with the arrangement.

Daniel wants to be professional, do his job to the best of his ability, but what he didn’t count on was his charges magnetic personality which pulls him close, too close for comfort ad to keep the assignment on an entirely professional footing.

Bryan is young, attractive and extremely devious. He knows the effect his charms have on people and uses them to get what he wants. There are times when he doesn’t always get it his own way and he really doesn’t like it. He can be childlike in his reactions at times, storming off and throwing strops of almost epic proportions, but how much of this is his real personality, and how much is his merely playing his role as one of Hollywood’s hottest rising stars to perfection.

Bryan has secrets, a lot of them. For a man very much in the public eye, so much is kept hidden away. You do get glimpses and teases of what these might be throughout the book, but never quite enough to work out the underlying mystery, or what he is trying so hard to hide from everyone. I actually stopped trying to work it out, and just settled back and enjoyed the ride. I’m glad I just went with it as there is no way I could’ve or would’ve ever guessed what would be revealed in the end, IF I had, it would’ve spoiled the surprise at the end of the book.

These two characters are well rounded and totally perfect together. They fit together well and although it’s not a smooth or easy relationship they have, but if it had been it wouldn’t have worked as well as it did for me. The interaction between them was believable, also very hot and steamy at times, it was, as always with Sage’s writing, perfectly balanced.
I was totally drawn into this story from the first page, and was captivated until the last, and was definitely left wanting more, which is nothing new!

Sage’s writing is captivating and pulls me inside the book with the characters and I can honestly say, he is now one of my favourite authors, and this book, one of the best he has written in my opinion.

Everyone Deserves to Be Loved...
By A.Q.Branch
Although I was not convinced I would enjoy Playing the Hand You're Dealt after reading a synopsis of the book (as the underlying "creep-out" factor that surrounded a young woman falling in love with her best friend's father had the potential to overshadow the sub-plots), Trice Hickman's third novel, Playing the Hand You're Dealt, proved to be both a great summer read and the ultimate page turner!

Without giving away any of the story, this is a definite book club must read! Set in Washington, DC, this newest work of fiction from Trice Hickman is so much more than the tale of a torrid affair; rather, I would argue that any of the other sub-plots (i.e., mother-daughter relationships, African American's attitudes toward gays/lesbians, perceived social status, and perceptions of beauty in the African American community) all had enough substance to stand on their own as separate storylines and therefore, were just as central to the development of the characters as the primary storyline.

I do, however, suggest (although not absolutely necessary) that if you have not already read Unexpected Interruptions and Keeping Secrets and Telling Lies, that you do so before reading this work (as the characters from the other two novels, in a writing style similar to E. Lynn Harris', are intertwined into this storyline and much of the back-story is key to truly understanding the actions and overall development of the characters in this work).

I would have given the book five stars if the nice, neat "fairly tale" didn't seem so contrived.

I am looking forward to reading the next book by Trice Hickman; her works of fiction continue to give a voice to the middle/upper-middle class African American, a voice that will always struggle to be heard in the "land" of street/urban literature that is currently saturating the market.

That tricky kind of love
By Lady Greene
Samantha Baldwin is born with a platinum spoon but can't shake her attraction to the thug in her child's father. She used to the wild life of no responsibility despite the fact that she doesn't have to want for anything financially. She sabotages any chance of being truly happy because of self contempt.

Emily Snow wasn't born with as many leisure's as her best friend but she has lived by the golden rule which has allowed her to live a safe life. When her mother passes away she decided to switch things up in her life and take chances that she normally wouldn't take. Like exploring her attraction to her best friend's father.

This book was very entertaining. I loved the fact that the author was not afraid to step out of what was safe and comfortable and write a book that explored something that is just a little taboo. Almost everyone sees the attraction between Emily Snow and Ed Baldwin, that is everyone except for Samantha and her self absorbed mother who knows that something is going on but can place her finger on it. Feeling each person's emotions as they went through the same situations was priceless. The anxiety and sexual tension that built up between Ed and Emily intensified my reading pleasure. The only thing I wanted more from was the end. I felt like it just concluded without getting the opportunity to see how the two best friends came back together. I wanted to be a fly on the wall when that happened. Still, this book was still very well written and held my attention throughout.

Hearts are Wild
By Jennifer Coissiere "The Tough Critic"
There are some unspoken vows and invisible lines that friends will not cross. In Playing the Hand You're Dealt by Trice Hickman, Emily Snow and Samantha Baldwin will try to weather the storm when Emily and Samantha's father, Ed, finally admit to their feelings after 12 years of fantasizing. Samantha felt the need to find Emily the perfect man to warm her lonely nights. Emily felt there was only one man for her and she did not know what to do.

Ever since their college days Samantha and Emily became more than just friends, they were sisters that would do anything for the other. It only made sense for Emily to move to Washington, D.C. when her mother died. However, Emily did not realize how difficult life would be for her being so close to Ed. She does not want to hurt Brenda, Samantha's mother, or Samantha, but denying her feelings for Ed would cause her the same amount of pain. When Ed and Emily found that the time had come to act on their feelings, their worlds become more complicated than either of them could ever imagine. How many people would be hurt by their actions? Can anyone ever get past the pain?

Samantha is no angel. All her life she has rebelled against her mother. She is a feisty no-holds-barred type of woman. Being around Emily, Samantha tries to learn how to be calmer while making better choices in all areas of her life. What would the revelation of her father's relationship with her best friend do to her?

While reading Playing the Hand You're Dealt I found myself shaking my head. The characters were well developed and their emotions were raw. Although I enjoyed the story, the retelling of scenes from the different point-of-views were a tad excessive. I understood why it was important to see the parts of the story from the viewpoint of more than one character but I believe some of it could have been omitted. I recommend this book to readers of contemporary fiction and real life situations full of twists.

Love in the Anthropocene, by Dale Jamieson, Bonnie Nadzam

An audacious collaboration between an award-winning novelist and a leading environmental philosopher, Love in the Anthropocene taps into one of the hottest topics of the day, literally and figuratively—our corrupted environment—to deliver five related stories (“Flyfishing,” “Carbon,” “Holiday,” “Shanghai,” and “Zoo”) that investigate a future bereft of natural environments, introduced with a discussion on the Anthropocene—the Age of Humanity—and concluding with an essay on love.
The “love” these writer/philosophers investigate and celebrate is as much a constant as is human despoliation of the planet; it is what defines us, and it is what may save us. Science fiction, literary fiction, philosophical meditation, manifesto? All the above. This unique work is destined to become an essential companion—a primer, really—to life in the 21st century.
