connects the dots between economics, race and education reform

Lipman lays out the case that the current push in education reform is more about political and economic ideology than about improving schools for the students who are least well served by public schools. She shows how school "turnarounds" specifically, and privately run charters in general are used by mayors and other policy makers to gain political points and make new urban neighborhoods "safe" for the upper middle class while further marginalizing low income families - specifically in non-white communities. Many people are realizing that "school choice" is not working to improve public education, but Lipman points out why charters and turnarounds are still being pushed despite evidence that they are no better than neighborhood schools. It's more about real-estate development, conservative ideology and municipal power than about education. The book is a pleasure to read because it includes hard data along with stories of parent and teacher activists working to save their schools from destruction. The chapter on venture philanthropy is especially helpful for understanding the role that the huge foundations are playing in this hostile takeover of urban neighborhood schools. This is a must-read for anyone trying to get a complete view of the current education reform landscape. Lipman connects the dots.

Nice connection made between the neoliberal model and current education reform.

As an educator I read a lot of material about the politics and ideology of the current education climate in America and around the world. I'll keep this short and to the point, much like the book. In all I have read I have yet to find such a well thought and worked through connection between the social and political ideology of neoliberalism and the call for educational reform. The book is very specific to Chicago public schools and how neoliberal ideology has shaped the education debate in that specific school district and part of the country. However many, if not all, of the points and connections discussed translate to cities and districts across the country. The book is full of personal excerpts from students, parents, and teachers as they way in on the state of education and the schools they frequent. Highly recomend this book for any one even at all interested in the over education debate in this country, from teachers to citizens without children. This book lays out nicely how we have gotten to where we are in the current debate and spells out who all the players are and what kind of roles they play. As mentioned above it's short and a quick read, well worth the time.

have been a fan of simply red and mick sence i first heard moneys too tight to mention,,have followed them through the years, much easier now eith computer, have almost all of their c.d.s and a few tapes.. hate it that mick has left simply red as they were a awsome sound but i will follow him in his new adventures.. i have read all of the books written about mick and red and all are good this one very good.. and i wish mick and red all the best..

Materials Selection in Mechanical Design 4th Edition

This book would be useful for a two semester sequence, the first teaching materials selection, and the second teaching materials preparation. It is a nice improvement over the third edition with clearer introduction to the design process, color graphics for selection charts, and at least a passing note now given to selection for electrical design.

This book still has mistakes in units and a certain level of sloppiness in formulations that have not been corrected since the second edition. Also, the presentation of methodologies that should be used to develop selection criteria (Chapter 4) lacks a pedagogical style that can make first-time studies difficult, especially for students who have little or no background in upper-level mechanical engineering coursework (ie, chemical engineers or materials scientists / engineers). The presentation of materials preparation in the second half of the book might benefit from a reference to fundamentals principles in materials preparation (the science of materials preparation to complement the engineering aspects).

Finally, the beginning part of this book teaches how to use materials selection charts as a core part of its methodology. Only three methods exist for students to get access to these charts or equivalents. The first is to make copies from the textbook. The second is by having the instructor provide clean copies of the figures. The third is by having access to an additional software package. The first two methods essentially require students to draw selection lines by hand, and they limit students to only those charts in the textbook. In addition, the charts are now contained in the instructor resources only as images that must be extracted from power point slides (the third edition provided the charts as stand-alone image or PDF files). Access to the materials selection software package lifts the first two limitations, but at a significant financial expense that might be beyond the bounds of smaller departments.

Easy to read, well-written, but watch out for mistakes.

Informative book with clear, concise writing. It uses the kinds of words you are accustomed to hearing in real life versus academic publications. It is very understandable and well-written.

The one problem I have is there are numerous problems in the calculations of many examples. I say this because my teacher has incorporated finding these mistakes into homework assignments... there are many! Please make sure to re-do any math you see!

Michael Ashby is the creator of the famed Ashby charts (materials selection charts) which make narrowing down materials choices for nearly any application far easier; this book has a wealth of these charts and all of the information necessary to use and understand them.

A great book with some publisher generated anchors!

This is a great book and should be widely available as a reference/textbook. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get a copy of the book and the book is ridiculously priced for a student (and therefore is unlikely to be purchased by a library). It's a shame that such a great piece of work isn't more easily purchased online or directly from the publisher. I've tried to buy a second copy of the book after finding the first in a book store and am still waiting for it to arrive after ordering the book two months ago.
I would ask the authors to demand, from the publisher, that this outstanding book be made more accessible.
As for the content of the book, the selection of topics and coverage are no less than outstanding. The authors will discuss a topic and then provide an example to illustrate how the topic is applied. Most, if not all, of the fundamental topics in digital communications are covered. Well documented references are provided if the reader desires more information than what's given in the book.

This textbook is very strong on Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) (Chapter 5) basic MLSD/Viterbi detection (Ch 7) Equalization (8 & 9) as well as continuous and and discrete-time PLLs (ch 14), and carrier and timing recovery (15 & 16). I feel the material about Error Control (12) is introductory and I haven't read the chapters on MIMO, and fading.

The text is very readable and the derivations are not too bad, meaning even though many are left as 'exercizes for the reader', there are answers in the back which if you miss a step you can kind of work backward and figure it out (note: not the problems at the back of the chapter just the in chapter exercizes)

I recommend this book unless you already have the 1st or 2nd edition already.

Used at many universities such as Georgia Tech, and as reference as in Valencia Polytechnic University, this is a must read book for every engineer in the world of communications...later it will serve you as a great reference, a good volume for your library. Wish there were more book like this one!! Adeu!

About the Author

V G Kiernan was born in 1913, near Manchester, studied classical languages and History at the Manchester Grammar School. In 1913 he entered the department of History at Cambridge. He passed both parts of the Tripos exam with first class and distinction, and was awarded a three year research grant. He wrote a thesis on British relations with China in the late 19th century, and was given a Fellowship of Trinity College. He spent some years in India (before the partition), teaching the Aitchison College in Lahore and doing publicity work connected with the War. After two more years at the Cambridge, he joined Edinburgh University as a lecturer in History. Retired in 1977, as Professor Emeritus, he has since lived at the township of Stow in the Scottish border hills. He has continued to write books and articles and was awarded an Iqbal medal from the Pakistani government.
