Fantstic *Modern* Astrolabe Book

First, if you're interested at all in astrolabes, this is the single best, most informative, most comprehensive book I've found. It's clear, concise and well illustrated. I'm very tempted to use the chapter on stereographic projections in my GIS classes.

It doesn't have many illustrations of historic instruments, but that's not it's focus. You can find those in the Time Museum or Western Astrolabes book and get more nuts and bolts info about the production process from Scientific Instruments of Elizabethan England. But for creating and using an astrolabe, you can't find a better reference- UNLESS you really want to use period processes. He doesn't even try to show how it was done, dismissing it with "Readers interested in the mathematical approach used in the Middle Ages are referred to Thomson for a thorough treatment"- that would be the translation of de Plana Spera. As I keep telling my daughter, life gets boring if you don't have anything to long for. I'll start saving the (argh!) $150 for that next.

The contents (with the exception of using trig instead of geometry to create the layout) are exceptional. The physical book is less so. I plan on using this heavily and I don't think it's going to hold up. The paperback cover is glued to the front and back pages to try to give it some stability, but the glue is already losing its hold. The pages themselves are glued in rather than bound. I know there wasn't a real choice in that, but it's a thick book and it's not going to hold up well- think of the Calvin and Hobbes collectors' editions. The paper is already yellowing and I just got it last week. I *know* these choices had to be made to keep the cost of the book down to something that wouldn't make people scream, but I'm going to take it to Kinkos and have it drilled so I can capture it inside a 3 ring binder. I'm not going to risk losing any of the pages. It has enough white space to make that feasible and still have room left over for notes.

An Extraordinary, in Depth Look at One of the Earliest Scientific Wonders

I saw my first astrolabe in a museum and was absolutely blown away. The sheer wonder of something that mapped the heavens in one dimension, essentially the first portable (analog) computer, overwhelmed me. It was used to tell time, cast horoscopes, predict astronomical events, and survey. In short, it was an instrument from ages when science, metaphysics and art were much more closely aligned. I spent time googling the subject, ran across Mr. Morrison's book and went the extra mile and bought the sturdier hardcover, and don't regret it. The book describes the machine's origins from the astronomer/astrologers of Classical Greece to the construction and sophisticated innovations by their Moslem intellectual heirs to the artistic constructions of late Renaissance Europe. No sage, scholar, or magician of merit would be found without an astrolabe of his own - even if it was just a paper version. The book goes into the nitty gritty of astrolabe math, construction, operations, and all known astrolabe variations. It also goes into a little detail on astrolabe computer programs and programming. There are some minor print errors, but if you email Mr. Morrison he'll gladly send you a .pdf of corrected pages. Overalll this is a spectacular book for anyone fascinated by history, science, and astronomy.

About the Author
Howard E. Taylor is a research chemist with the National Research Program, Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey located in Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Taylor has played a major role over the past 25 years in the development of plasma spectrometric techniques in analytical chemistry, as reflected in his more than 150 technical publications and the presentation of numerous papers at national and international technical meetings. He has served as faculty affiliate at Colorado State University and has taught American Chemical Society Short Courses for more than 15 years.

A challenging but enjoyable experience: Read a bit of Feller first.

I am quite enjoying this book. The mathematics is meticulous. As the motivation for some material has not always been clear, I have found it helpful to study this text along side two others: One is Feller - "An Introduction to Probability Theory and its Applications, volume 1." Feller is great in providing deep insight into how the mathematics arises from the nature of the problem and its formulation. Additionally, Feller provides innumerable examples that help. Pay special attention to chapters 11 and 13 of Feller - those on generating functions and recurrent events and renewal theory, respectively. Feller's intuitive derivation of many of the equations are very helpful. Feller also provides a nice chapter (15) on Markov chains.

Another useful text, I have found, is Karlin's later text, "An Introduction to Stochastic Modeling." This text is more elementary. However, it often provides insight and explanations to material that "A First Course" omits.

The analysis mathematics background required for "A First Course in Stochastic Processes" is equivalent to the analysis one gets from 'baby' Rudin, chapters 1 - 7, say. Those are enough I think. A decent probability course is useful, of course.

Read chapters 11 and 13 from Feller first. Then jump into Karlin. It's a challenging but an enjoyable experience.

About the Author
Youn-Kyung Kim, PhD, ACR, ACRA, ITAA, is a Professor of Retail and Consumer Sciences at University of Tennessee. Her research topics of interest are consumer experience, experiential retailing, mall shopping behavior, international retailing, and tourism retailing. She has published over 50 articles in journals and has received several Best Paper Awards from American Collegiate Retailing Association and International Textiles and Apparel Association. She has served as guest editor and editorial board member for a number of journals, currently serving as Associate Editor for Clothing and Textiles Research Journal and a member of International Textiles and Apparel Association (ITAA), American Collegiate Retailing Association (ACRA), and Association for Consumer Research (ACR).

Pauline Sullivan, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Texas State University - San Marcos.

Judith Forney, ITAA, is a Professor and Dean of the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management at the University of North Texas. Her research interests include consumer behavior, adolescents and moral emotions, behavior, self-esteem, shoplifting; cultural and cross-cultural evaluative aspects of consumer behavior; cross-national comparisons; and apparel/textile international production and trade.

It is applied to unbounded media governed by the hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic differential equations.
* The damping-solvent extraction method permits the analysis of a bounded medium only.
* The doubly-asymptotic multi-directional transmitting boundary is exact for the low- and high-frequency limits at preselected wave propagation directions.
All concepts are explained using simple examples that the reader can follow step by step. A computer program of the consistent infinitesimal finite-element cell method available on disk analyses two- and three-dimensional unbounded and bounded media for the scalar and vector wave equations and the diffusion equation in the frequency and time domains.

    Excellent source, but with a caveat.

    I was a little rusty on o-chem and this book served as an excellent resource to review. The questions are of moderate difficulty and I was quite surprised with the amount of biochemistry related questions, as we did not really cover any biochemistry topics in my o-chem course. Also, the explanations are pretty thorough, which I really liked. Another feature I really liked was that they would explain why some of the wrong answers were wrong.

    However, I did come across some errors in some of the explanation sections. Sometimes, the answer given in the explanation would be different from the listed answer choice, which was especially frustrating. It also seemed like the writers included different answer choices by mistake on some of the questions. On one question, it asked for the compound that didn't have a conjugated system. Simple enough, right? One of the choices was an allene and another was an isolated diene . I thought that maybe I just forgot what a conjugated system was, but the explanation said that it was looking for a compound that had two or more double or triple bonds separated by one single bond .

    So far, I've only done 9 or 10 out of the 12 question sets, and there've probably been only ~4-5 errors that I've spotted, so I would still highly recommend this product for o-chem review. Just be cautious; if you feel that a part of an explanation doesn't quite make sense, look it up on another source and compare. Happy studying ;)

    I am biology major and have a solid foundation in the sciences. This book has great organic chemistry practice questions. I was looking for a source of practice questions and my friend told me about this book. I bought it and several of the other titles from Sterling Test. I recommend them for DAT prep. Great DAT organic chemistry practice.

    The amount of mistakes in this book is APPALLING. ...

    The amount of mistakes in this book is APPALLING. I have found at least 20 mistakes. They range from saying complete opposite things on two different pages, numbers being wrong, explanations wrong. This is supposed to be helping me study for the DAT, but all I'm doing is finding mistakes. There isn't even contact information on the company website!!!!!
