Though written by a medieval Sufi master in North Africa in the late 13th century, this classic Islamic text is as relevant today as ever, arguing as it does that human selfishness and consumption can kill the soul. Kugle, who teaches at Swarthmore, suggests that a rough English translation of the title might be The Book of Illumination for Desisting from Selfish Calculation, because the text "invites us gently on a journey into self-critique, in order to reduce our needs and restrain our craving." Shaykh Ibn 'Ata' Allah offers a surprisingly practical text, one that distinguishes between saving and hoarding, for example, or exhorts readers to cleave to God and community rather than relying only on themselves. But he does this in profoundly theological ways, emphasizing the ephemeral and frail nature of humanity when compared to God's benevolent power. As with many Sufi mystical texts, this one can sometimes seem difficult to understand or rife with paradox. However, readers will be rewarded by a message of humility, devotion and economy that is both timeless and timely.

Regarding the methodology of overcoming self-preoccupation and fear for ones sustenance, it is hard to imagine that we, of today, could "literally" sit as disciples in the presence of a spiritual giant though he lived nearly 1000 years ago, and hear a saint of such magnitude as Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah carefully recount the enlightening counsels of his own masters (Abul Hasan al-Shadhili, the "Axial Saint" of the 12th century and Shaykh al-Mursi who continued the lineage) as well as renown Sufis such as Abdul Qadir Jilani and Abu Madyan.

Quoting al-Jilani, the Shaykh says, "My brothers and sisters, I did not arrive in union with God by staying awake all night in worship, by staying aware all day fasting, or by staying engrossed learning knowledge! Rather, I arrived at union with God by generosity and humility and letting my breast be at peace." He adds, a Sufi master has said, "How do you expect to enter into God's presence when something behind you is dragging you back…" Then Ibn ‘Ata’ Allah goes on to present ways in which the "whole heart" is realized fully in one's life and how we shift our attention away from being overly self-preoccupied and endlessly absorbed in self-directed calculation into a state of utter trust.

About the Author
Shaykh Ahmad Ibn 'Ata' Allah Al-Iskandari, one of the greatest spiritual masters of the thirteenth century, was both a Muhaddith and a Maliki jurist whose works became basic training manuals for aspirants across North Africa. A student of al-Mursi, he was the second to succeed Imam Abul-Hasan, the founder of the Shadhili Order, which continues to this day. His work made an inestimable contribution to elucidating the principles and practices of Sufism.

Scott Kugle is a professor at Swarthmore College.

Accessible Sufi Teachings For the English-Speaking Audience

In many ways, the deep and meaningful teachings of Tasawwuf [Sufi'ism] have become watered down to a cardboard, meaningless "New Age" spiritual practice. For many valid reasons Sufi'ism has appealed to many non-Muslims because of its universalities and its ability to speak to "all travelers on the Path". One significant issue that I've often had truck with over many of the writers/translators of Sufi works is that they ignored that fact that many of the Sufi masters were deeply religious people, who had mastered the basics of the religion [mandatory daily prayer, fasting, yearly alms-giving, pilgrimage and so forth] and having gone beyond that also mastered such sciences as jurisprudence [fiqh], Arabic grammar, rhetoric, rhetorical language [balaaghah] and so forth. But as the author points out in the introduction, something key happened with many of these Sufi masters - the obligatory wasn't enough. They needed something that would also soothe and treat the heart. They created a synthesis that was founded in religious fundamentals [not to be conflated with fundamentalism] and sought to formulate a system that would deal with issues of the self [shahawaat or nafs]. Ibn 'Ata' Allah al-Iskandari was a great Sufi personality. As you will read in this volume, he is a man that went through great personal, spiritual and religious transformation in the pursuit of self-rectification. I highly recommend this read as it is highly accessible; an academic piece that allows for the inclusion of a broader audience. In my opinion, this would be in keeping with the teachings of Ibn 'Ata' Allah himself [and Tasawwuf in general]. You'll enjoy this read.

A pleasing reading

This book was authored by an egyptian sufi master in the Shadhili order. It has not many diverse topics that was covered, but those that are indeed covered, are full with intuitive illumination assisted by useful and interesting stories/parables. A person who like reading easy sufi stuff that enlightens ones heart, may like this book. Its also helpful for others to get oneself educated in how to improve ones self over self's carnal desires.

Transsexuality is the issue in this candid novel told from the viewpoint of Logan, a high-school senior in a small Missouri town. The story quickly moves from Logan’s attraction to Sage, a cute, strange new girl at school, to his shock at the discovery that Sage was born male and is in transition to become a female. More than anything, Logan worries that once Sage’s identity is revealed, people will think that he is gay for being attracted to a boy. Then Sage attempts suicide, and Logan feels guilty about failing her. Unlike Sage’s brutal father, though, Logan never denies that Sage is a “she.” The story is long and repetitive, and the messages are overt, but many teens—both those familiar with transgender issues and those who are not—will welcome the honest take on a rarely explored subject. The biological facts about hormones and Sage’s changing body are woven in, and Katcher clearly dramatizes the characters’ secrets, lies, shame, and denial, as well as the cruel prejudice they experience with family and friends. Depressing

The tagline should read, "No matter your gender or sexual orientation, you'll enjoy seeing how much your loved ones actually hate and despise you." Apparently, we cannot actually accept that people are different. I felt so horrible for Sage and hated Logan so much of the book I just didn't really enjoy it. Well-written, but depressing.

A beautiful, powerful, emotional read.

This is a book that grabs you by the heart and gets into your head. It's the first book in a very long time where I not only had no idea how it was going to end, but was sincerely concerned with how the situation would resolve itself.

I could write an essay about this book, what it meant to me, and how I feel about it. I loved it and I hated it. I was afraid to read another chapter, and I never wanted it to end. My head wants me to wrap Brian Katcher in my arms and thank him for such an amazing story, even as my heart wants me to pound on his chest and demand that he rewrite the ending.

I fell in love with these characters - Logan as much as Sage, to my surprise - and didn't want to let them go . . . especially not like that.

Ultimately, this could just as easily been a story about racial, religious, or cultural identity. The elements of the story could have worked with any other struggle at the heart, but I dare say the book would not have been as powerful (or nearly so interesting). Through the question of Sage's gender identity we also get to explore questions of sexual identity/orientation, particularly with Logan, who struggles with what it means to love a girl who used to be (and, from a purely biological standpoint, still is) a boy.

Brian Katcher's novel is as brave as it is bold, and he's to be applauded as much for his choice of subject, as for his talents as a story teller.

A powerful novel for older teens

I was so impressed with this book! Love stories are not my usual thing, but this one was such a good read that I was amazed. Be forewarned, it's not for everyone; this is an unconventional tale of coming of age, true love and self discovery. I picked it up to read because I felt it was going to be a controversial addition to our library collection, and it probably will cause it's share of problems. What I do hope that people will see in this book is a stunningly sensitive story peopled with memorable characters that tug at your heart. It can hopefully teach a few lessons on understanding and acceptance, maybe open a few eyes to some of the differences that exist in our society and generate some soul searching among its teen and adult readers.

I don't mean to indicate that this was strictly an "issue" book, and I don't want to spoil any of the plot by talking specifics. Above all, this is a good story. It was well plotted and although I initially had problems really believing Logan's character, the author developed him so skillfully throughout the book that by the end I felt like I truly knew him. I will remember Sage and Logan for a good while and look forward to telling others about this book. I would recommend this to anyone 16 or older who enjoys a good romance and is willing to look at things with a non judgemental eye. A big recommend - and thanks to the author for a great, realistic ending. You didn't cop out when the going got tough.

About the Author
Steve Rabin is a Principal Software Engineer at Nintendo of America, where he researches new techniques for Nintendo's next generation systems, develops tools, and supports Nintendo developers. Before Nintendo, Steve worked primarily as an AI engineer at several Seattle start-ups including Gas Powered Games,WizBang Software Productions, and Surreal Software. He managed and edited the AI Game Programming Wisdom series of books, as well as the book Introduction to Game Development, and has over a dozen articles published in the Game Programming Gems series. He's spoken at the Game Developers Conference and moderates the AI roundtables. Steve teaches artificial intelligence at both the University of Washington Extension and at the DigiPen Institute of Technology. He earned a B.S. in computer engineering and an M.S. in computer science, both from the University of Washington.

A fantastic "a la carte" tool kit

Being in the game development business, I am always on the lookout for new and different tricks, techniques and strategies. When most programmers go to the lectures, panels and roundtables at the Game Developers Conference, we are looking to pick up this same sort of material... we share ideas and approaches - but rarely get the chance to get down to the code details to make it easy for us to implement those ideas into our own work. This book makes that possible.
Along the lines of the other "Gems" series of books, this collection is filled with ACTUAL techniques and code chunks that are used by some of the top professionals in the industry. Just flipping through the list of the contributors to the book is like going around the room at one of the AI roundtables at the GDC... in fact, Steve Woodcock and Neil Kirby are 2 of the "3 AI guys" that RUN those roundtables! (The 3rd being Eric Dybsand who has contributed to the "Gems" series but not this title.)
Many books on game development are informative. This one is actually USEFULL. I have personally adopted Steve Rabin's source code from the section "Implementing a State Machine Language" into my own game and it has saved me many hours of development and improved the readability and understandability of my code for the rest of the team. Just that section alone has netted at least a 1000:1 return on the cost of this book. Other sections have given me a different approach on how to handle the economic strategy layer that I could have come upon myself... but was able to implement a lot quicker than if I had done it myself. It was definately worth the price.
Are any of these sections worth the purchase price for YOU? I suppose that depends on how much you value you your time. Once you equate the cost of the book to the man hours you save, it's a no brainer!

Up to date coverage of all things AI. Highly recommended.

Written in the same format as the Game Programming Gems books this book should be the first thing you buy if you're serious about AI. Well written and edited by some of today's most knowledgable AI programmers the topics covered include path planning, race AI, team tactics, finite state machines, scripting etc. The path planning section of the book alone is priceless. I did feel there may have been a little overlap with some of the AI sections in the Game Programming Gems books and one or two pearls of wisdom could have been expanded upon but other than that it was hard to fault the book. Therefore, get it! Read it! Treasure it!

Picking Up The Pace

Even with me being out for the summer, I'm having trouble keeping up with all the media that I want to. Comics fall by the wayside. DVDs go unwatched. And books weigh my shelves down. I need to be the Fastest Man Alive to keep up with everything. *sigh* So much good stuff, so little time.

Geoff Johns continues some massive plotting in Flash #3, shaking out more strands of his elaborate story that has ignited Barry Allen's return to his own series. There's a lot going on in this one, as we discovered in the first two issues.

Most intriguing of all is Captain Boomerang's sudden ability to manifest what appear to be black lantern-inspired boomerangs. He's able to form them out of air, which is really cool. If you think about all the old comics, poor old Captain Boomerang had to keep up with his weapons during the heat of battle or he'd soon be fighting with just his fists. Since Digger Harkness is not superhuman in any way, that would make him an appetizer in any real fight with a superhero. I gotta go back and read some old Flash issues to see how he was able to hold his own back then. I seem to recall giant boomerangs and boomerang planes, but those are just warm-up targets. These new energy boomerangs are totally cool.

I like the idea that Barry is looking into a cold case in his job as a forensic scientist at police headquarters, but we're not seeing any real development on that front. It's been left hanging pretty much. I know Barry is on the run from the Rogues of the future and Captain Boomerang is waiting in the wings, but I question whether the subplot should have been introduced if I'm going to be kept waiting.

Geoff Johns has a charming and romantic view of Barry's relationship with Iris. The scenes where the two are together are fantastic. I love the fact that Johns takes times to hook them up in a coffee shop having a normal day before everything breaks loose, and the way Iris agrees to help Barry with his hardship case instead of continuing to promise doom and gloom is a breath of fresh air.

Of course, that also means Iris can go off and get into trouble on her own. Which may be the point.

Francis Manapul's artwork continues to grow on me, and I think a lot of that has to do with the way it just looks "light" on the pages. There aren't many dark tones in all the action. Central City looks well-lighted and roomy, the antithesis of Gotham City, and not nearly as congested and busy as Metropolis. Manapul and Johns are bringing a new city to life as easily as they're renewing this character. Manapul does the action sequences Johns generously gives him all in stride and makes them look good.

Back in the heyday of Barry's original book, the Flash Facts were often interesting and science-based because so many of the writers back then had those interests. I can't help but feel they're just two more pages of story I could have had because a quick trip to Wikipedia would satisfy any curiosity a reader might have about boomerangs, and I got the black lantern affiliation all on my own. However, the emergence of the power does make me wonder if other people are going to start developing the same kind of ability.

About the Author

Krzysztof (Kris) Iniewski, Ph.D., manages R&D developments at Redlen Technologies, a manufacturer of high resolution Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) semiconductors in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and is also executive director of CMOS Emerging Technologies Inc. (www.cmoset.com). His research interests are in hardware design for medical and networking applications. From 2004 to 2006, Dr. Iniewski was an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Alberta, where he conducted research on low-power wireless circuits and systems. Previously, he held various technical and management positions in industry, developing a number of VLSI chips used in optical networks, and he was also an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Iniewski has published more than 100 research papers and holds 18 international patents granted in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan.

About the Author
James T. Ellis, PhD, BCBA-D earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University and is a licensed psychologist and board certified behavior analyst. For over 20 years, Dr. Ellis has provided services for children with autism spectrum disorders and their families. In 2008, he helped found the Step by Step School for Children with Autism in Guyana, South America and in 2012, he founded Step by Step Behavioral Solutions, through which he continues to provide consultation and therapeutic support to individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.

Christine Almeida, MSEd, EdS, BCBA earned her MSEd in Special Education and EdS in Behavioral Education from Simmons College in Boston, MA. Ms. Almeida is a practicing board certified behavior analyst in the Boston area who has worked in both private and public schools. She currently provides oversight of services for young children with autism spectrum disorders for a public school. Ms. Almeida has presented workshops at the local, regional, and national levels on the subjects of educational assessment, play intervention, and social skills.

About the Author
Harry Norris is Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of London. Before this he was Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at SOAS and an associate Fellow at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London.

Reading is a chore, but the information is surprising.

This book is intriguing only because of the subject. The text is pretty much a chore to read, and the maps are not very useful. The fact that there were Muslims in the Baltic region is contrary to the prevailing view that Islam is a matter of very recent immigration and is an intrusive presence in Europe.

There have been Muslims in the region since the 14th century when there was a population of Muslim Tatars in what was then Poland-Lithuania (which was for a time, the largest European state). Apparently some descendants are still there.

I cannot recommend this book except for the information, which for some readers may make the chore of slogging through it. worthwhile.

About the Author
Harvey Lee Snyder earned a BA in Music at Columbia College, New York, then worked in various capacities for the Columbia Record Club, Mercury and Philips Records, and Mills Music. For the record club he wrote an illustrated history of American popular music, and he wrote album liner notes for Columbia, Philips. Spoken Arts, and Caedmon records. More recently he was a consultant for several direct-marketing companies. In retirement he took up writing full-time and returned to his roots in music. Afternoon of a Faun is his first published book.

What fun!

Who knew a book about classical music could be so much fun? It reads like a novel (and at times like a scandal sheet) and brings the lay person in on the magic of Debussy's music and his enormous contribution to the arts.

A Wonderful Biography

This book is beautifully written, and I was especially entranced by the descriptions of the music. I could almost hear the performances. The drama of Debussy's romantic and musical life is compelling. The humor is unexpected and terrific.

I had never read a book about music. I didn’t know Afternoon of a Faun, either the book by Mallarme or the music by Debussy. And, I’m embarrassed to admit how little I knew about the late 19th century, the Belle Epoque. But when I started to read the Prelude of Snyder’s Afternoon of a Faun: How Debussy Created a new Music for the Modern World I became hooked. The author has written a spellbinder. Was I really holding my breath to find out how the Faun would be received by its French audience over a hundred years ago? This was only the first in many , many times that I couldn’t put this book down. And in the process of this great enjoyment I have not only learned a great deal about Debussy and his new music, and of a host of other fascinating musicians and literary figures, but also of a an era that is now wonderfully alive in my imagination. Thank you Mr. Snyder for filling in such important gaps in my education and doing it in such a thoroughly entertaining way. I love this book.
