Reading Arab Women's Autobiographies: Shahrazad Tells Her Story, by Nawar Al-Hassan Golley

Authors of autobiographies are always engaged in creating a "self" to present to their readers. This process of self-creation raises a number of intriguing questions: why and how does anyone choose to present herself or himself in an autobiography? Do women and men represent themselves in different ways and, if so, why? How do differences in culture affect the writing of autobiography in various parts of the world?

This book tackles these questions through a close examination of Arab women's autobiographical writings. Nawar Al-Hassan Golley applies a variety of western critical theories, including Marxism, colonial discourse, feminism, and narrative theory, to the autobiographies of Huda Shaarawi, Fadwa Tuqan, Nawal el-Saadawi, and others to demonstrate what these critical methodologies can reveal about Arab women's writing. At the same time, she also interrogates these theories against the chosen texts to see how adequate or appropriate these models are for analyzing texts from other cultures. This two-fold investigation sheds important new light on how the writers or editors of Arab women's autobiographies have written, documented, presented, and organized their texts.

Very good reference
By review
i bought this book as I was taking a course on writing autobiography. i was interested in how arab women writers write autobiography. unfortunely, the book is not that throuogh. This is defintely because Golley is a pioneer in that trend of criticism: critising arab women writers who write autobiography. the book is for students and reserachers not interesting to the normal reader. It is a very good start for a researcher on arab women writers writing autobiography. Buy it only if you are student or researcher.

The Synergy of Film and Music: Sight and Sound in Five Hollywood Films, by Peter Rothbart

Although writers on film music frequently allude to specific parts of scores, comprehensive examinations of entire scores are rare. In addition, most analyses of scores composed for the screen are discussed outside their cinematic context. To best understand the role music plays in the production of a motion picture, however, it benefits the viewer to consider all of the elements that comprise the film experience. In The Synergy of Film and Music: Sight and Sound in Five Hollywood Films, Peter Rothbart considers the aural and visual aspects of five representative films: West Side Story, Psycho, Empire of the Sun, Altered States, and American Beauty. For each film, the author demonstrates how a variety of elements work together to create a singular experience.

After reviewing the various roles that music can serve in a film, as well as providing an overview of the film scoring process, Rothbart looks at each film, examining them one musical cue at a time, so the reader can watch the film while reading about each cue. In these analyses, timecode markings from commercial DVDs are provided in the margins alongside the text, which allow the reader to correlate the on-screen drama to the second. Rothbart explains how music is used in a specific cue and why the decision was made to use that particular musical idea at that moment. Consequently, film music aficionados—as well as students and composers of film music—can gain real-world perspective of how music is used in conjunction with other elements. In this way, the author raises awareness of music’s relationship to virtually every other aspect of cinema—dialogue, sound effects, costuming, set design, and cinematography—to deepen the viewer’s experience.

Written in a deliberately nontechnical way, this book is intended for anyone interested in film to easily follow along. At the same time, the information can benefit professional filmmakers or composers because they can see with great detail how each cue unfolds along with all of the visual elements of the film. This unique analysis makes The Synergy of Film and Music a fascinating and instructive volume that both casual viewers and students of cinema will appreciate.

This book is horrible, Do not buy this book !!!
By A Customer
I had this instructor at LSU may years ago. The class was much better than the book. The book is poorly organized as are the examples. I have read many circuit analysis books and this is definitely the worst.

Not for the beginner.
By A Customer
I agree with the other two previous reviews.
This is the book that we use to "learn" basic electric circuit analysis. I say "learn" because this book is not written for the 'never-have-seen-this-before'-student. I find it very hard to follow. The authors understand the material so well that they can not see it as the novice would for the first time. I find the layout non-user-friendly and there are many mistakes. Save yourself a lot of frustration by not buying this book. I suggest getting an equivalent book by the author Theodore F. Bogart who is an incredible writer for the beginning learner.

Errors everywhere
By A Customer
With all the errors in the fifth edition of Basic Electric Circuit Analysis, I shudder to think what the earlier editions were like. This may have been a classic but the content in this edition is soured by the lack of attention to detail. As a first time student to circuit analysis, I expected to rely on the information contained in the book. I was treated instead by numerous misleading statements and downright incorrect answers to exercises. This is the first time in my third year as an undergraduate that a textbook has caused me this much grief.

The Lost Child of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and a Fifty Year Search, by Martin Sixsmith

When she fell pregnant as a teenager in Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee was sent to the convent at Roscrea in Co. Tipperary to be looked after as a fallen woman. She cared for her baby for three years until the Church took him from her and sold him, like countless others, to America for adoption. Coerced into signing a document promising never to attempt to see her child again, she nonetheless spent the next fifty years secretly searching for him, unaware that he was searching for her from across the Atlantic.

Philomena's son, renamed Michael Hess, grew up to be a top Washington lawyer and a leading Republican official in the Reagan and Bush administrations. But he was a gay man in a homophobic party where he had to conceal not only his sexuality but, eventually, the fact that he had AIDs. With little time left, he returned to Ireland and the convent where he was born: his desperate quest to find his mother before he died left a legacy that was to unfold with unexpected consequences for all involved.

The Lost Child of Philomena Lee is the tale of a mother and a son whose lives were scarred by the forces of hypocrisy on both sides of the Atlantic and of the secrets they were forced to keep. A compelling narrative of human love and loss, Martin Sixsmith's moving account is both heartbreaking yet ultimately redemptive.

Different book?
By Jill Meyer
I just finished reading the 18 reader reviews of "The Lost Child of Philomena", before writing my own review of the book. And I can't figure out if everybody reviewing this book read the same book. About half of the reviewers referred to the book as mostly about Philomena, an Irish "Magdalene", torn apart from her child after raising him for three years in a home for unwed mothers in Ireland. The others appeared to have read a different book -and the same one I read - which is mostly about the child, Michael Hess, who was adopted by an American couple in the mid-1950's. The story is mostly about HIS life in the US and his growing up with the angst that adopted children sometimes have about their origins, as well as his coming to terms about his sexuality and life in college and law school and life in Washington DC as an official at the Reagen and HW Bush administrations and then at the Republican National Committee. Only at the end were Martin Sixsmith and Philomena brought back into the story.

Okay, that's not a problem for the purchaser and reader of the book, now retitled "Philomena: A Mother, A Son, and A 50 Year Search", as long as s/he knows in advance that's NOT what the book is about. This book is about 75% about Michael, his life, and his family - which IS very interesting - and about 25% about Irish shaming of young pregnant women, the eventual "selling" of their babies, and Philomena's search for her given-up child. I am going to see the movie, starring Dame Judi Dench this weekend, and I'll bet that the movie is more about Philomena than her child.

I point this out because the movie marketers seem to have taken a book - more about the son - and turned it around and made the movie more about the mother, and then tried to rebrand the book to align with the movie. Either that, or the early reviewers were reading an entirely different book than the rest of us, a book that WAS mostly about the mother and her search.

I also couldn't quite tell if the book was fiction or non-fiction. If it was non-fiction, then a whole lot of people know what they were saying 50 years ago. Sixsmith writes in the afterward that he interviewed a lot of the characters alive at that point, but then he also put characters together and changed some names. All in all, I didn't think the book was particularly well-written. I'm hoping the movie is better.

Enlightening and frustrating but so well done
By jocelyn
Philomena Lee represents thousands of women who might otherwise have lived fruitful lives and their children might have otherwise given Ireland educators, musicians, scientists, doctors, writers, productive happy people. The Catholic Church took all that away from its own country that supported it and was too loyal. The nuns and priests again were above the law, and were responsible for many innocent people living through tortuous frustration, thinking they had done something wrong, they were being punishes for their "sins." Young Michael/Andrew has memories of his mother, but feels as though he never belonged anywhere. His life may have been much different had the nuns at the Abbey treated Philomena with humaneness and respect, and maybe just a little love for God's "image and likeness." This search for the son and mother was well researched and very well written. I couldn't leave the book alone. I had to remind myself often that this is a true story. I could picture the roads in that part of Ireland and the old ruins since I've recently been to Tipperary. Now I want to return just to see the places Martin Sixsmith writes about. I also need to research some of the Nixon-Reagan years as this will help me understand how Michael lived during those conservative, stringent times. The photographs in the book are impressive. Thank you, Mr. Sixsmith, for including them.

I have recommended this book to many people. This needs to be known!

Lost Child of Philomena Lee
By A. Hux
The adoption process run in Ireland by Catholic Authorities sold children for money, without regard for the women and their children, effectively exploiting Mothers and their children whose lives were forever affected by the inhumane deception and cruelty - State & Church benefited financially. Secrecy, lies and illegal practices were the order of the day at Sean Ross Abbey fully supported by strong political governmental connections.

"The Lost Child of Philomena Lee" by Michael Sixsmith is a tragically true story. At first I hesitated to buy it, 451 pages long, but once I started to read I couldn't put it down. Mike/Anthony Lee searched for years. He felt a strong connection with his Irish roots and hoped one day his Mother, Philomena Lee, might find him.

Women victims in these Prison type Religious Institutions served as slaves and used to breast feed their children (cost saving for the Convent) and then when no longer needed thrown out without any guidance, counseling or meaningful support, which made way for more inmates. It's a wonder that any of these women and their children survived.

Review
A well-argued case for natural theology based on the recent burst of discoveries that God, after all, designed the universe for man. Given the excellent historical context in which Corey frames his case and the rational manner in which he closes off the loopholes, the stage is set for paradigm shift in the secular area. I highly recommend this book. (Hugh Ross, Astronomer)

This enthusiastically, but carefully, argued account should convince any reader that cavalier dismissal is no longer justified. Deism is back as a serious discussion partner. (John B. Cobb, Claremont Graduate School)

Cosmologists in the physics community are moving back to the idea that the universe provides compelling evidence of intelligent design. Michael Corey, hoping to reinstate old-style natural theology on the basis of this new-style physical evidence, presents what is perhaps the most complete account available. (David Ray Griffin, Claremont Graduate School)

God and the New Cosmology is an incisive book that makes a valuable contribution to contemporary philosophy of religion. (Stephen T. Davis, Claremont McKenna College)

About the Author
Michael A. Corey received his Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate School, where he studied theology and the philosophical relationship between science and religion.

Corey presents a convincing case for the existence of God.
By Kenneth Matheny (kmatheny@webtv.net)
With a background in science and having been trained in theology at Claremont, which is well-known for its contribution to process theology, M.A. Corey is well-qualified to discuss how recent scientific discoveries support a belief in the God of classical theism. Indeed, the case which Corey presents is very persuasive. Corey demonstrates how extremely unlikely the existence of human beings would be unless there is an intelligent designer of the universe who very carefully chose the precise conditions that were necessary for the evolution of intelligent life. In my opinion after reading Corey's book, it would take a great leap of faith NOT to believe in an intelligent Designer of the universe. The tremendous amount of evidence that Corey skillfully marshalls in support of his argument is very persuasive. If there is any weakness in this book, it might be Corey's tendency to overstate his case. He comes very close to saying that there is no other interpretation of the evidence that makes sense other than his theistic interpretation. This is not, however, the case. Many brilliant scientists, such as the late Carl Sagan, are aware of the evidence that Corey discusses, but are not persuaded that God exists. Corey could have been a little more sympathetic to the arguments of skeptics.Nonetheless, this is a fun book to read. And, while natural theology has been out of fashion since the time of David Hume, and only a few theologians (such as Wolfhart Pannenberg) have had the courage to address the relationshipof science and theology, M.A. Corey hasdemonstrated in his book that the concept of God the Creator is still relevant in the late 20th century.

Pseudo-science and (really) bad philosophy
By A Customer
Corey's book is a good example of bad science and even worse philosophy. Recent literature in physics and the philosophy of religion has given considerable attention to so called "fine-tuning" or anthropic arguments for God's existence. The basic idea is that the fundamental physical constants of our universe are one of a relatively small set of life permitting constants and that just about any small change thereof would make the existence of life as we know it impossible. Since it seems improbable that the constants would be what they are, the argument continues, we are justified in believing that some supernatural intelligence "fine-tuned" the universe for life.

Some versions of the argument have some degree of force, but Corey states his case FAR more strongly than is justified. Further, when he deals with objections to his position--particularly those of David Hume--it becomes abundently clear that he has absolutely no interestest in fairness or bussiness writing about philosophy. This is definitely NOT the place to look for an objective, well argued account of what is an interesting topic.

A Laughable Treatment of an Interesting Topic
By A Customer
A quick intro: Some books I read, find thought-provoking, and appreciate. I strongly disagree with them some of the time, strongly agree with them some of the time, most of the time a mixture of both. Some books I don't find all that thought-provoking at all. They tend to ignore potential objections and disregard interesting points. _God and the New Cosmology_ is like neither of these categories. It is a tour de force of laughable fallacy after laughable fallacy. I can scarcely read this book for more than 2 minutes without either (a) laughing out loud, or (b) yelling "Oh come on now!", or (c) widening my eyes and smacking my own head.
Since this is just an Amazon.Com review, I can't go into great detail, but I'll make a few general criticisms: (1) Corey assumes that the main problem nontheists have with natural theology is that the arguments are only probabilistic, not conclusive and deductive. Obviously this is too high of a standard to hold for empirical "proofs;" if there's enough evidence to make God's existence rather probable, then we have good reason to believe. But WHO has ever denied this? Corey wrongly attributes this viewpoint to Hume and Kant; this is an egregious philosophical insult. What seems like a full one-third of the book is Corey endlessly reiterating this obvious point.
(2) Corey never actually argues for the improbability of our universe or for the "special-ness" of our universe. These are the two primary points of contention in "fine-tuning" argument debates and Corey never seems to address them! He piles on "cosmic coincidence" after another, but never addresses the objection that there is no way to gauge the probabilities at play. Furthermore, Corey doesn't try to show why we should care about this particular coincidence -- it's certainly not obvious that this improbability should be more worthy of our curiosity than the run of a random number generator. Other proponents of this argument (John Leslie and Richard Swinburne, in particular) are known for their creative analogies in supporting this notion, but Corey doesn't even seem to realize that it is an issue. He just appeals to the Firing Squad Story, as if it were anything more than a refutation of the Weak Anthropic Principle (or the problem of old evidence).
(3) Corey makes ridiculous non sequiturs, basing his mootable inferences on the characters of skeptics. Two examples: "[O]ne would never expect non-thestic scientists... to openly mention God as a possible explanation for the cosmological evidence unless the data were so compelling that they almost had no choice in the matter. Indeed, judging from the many incredible things that these scientists have said about God's possible relationship to the cosmos, it is likely that deep down many of them actually believe in -- and are fascinated by -- the idea that God Himself may be behind the marvel of physical reality." p. 209
"[I]f a great skeptic like Hume goes so far as to say that the universe _may_ have arisen from something like design, the real truth is that it probably _did_ result from design." p. 280
First of all, the fact that these scientists address the idea of God just might be explained by (a) that they're dealing with the beginning of the universe, and (b) many people attribute extreme religious significance to this event. Second, Hume was not a "great skeptic" with respect to religion; as Hume scholar J.C.A. Gaskin describes it, Hume accepted an "attenuated deism." (_Hume's Philosophy of Religion_, pg. 7) Finally, where in the world does this inference come from? Hume was a skeptic; he thought the design argument had some merit to it, therefore, the design argument is sound and compelling? Examples of this kind of nonsense run throughout the book; you begin to think Corey is writing a psychological treatise on scientists and skeptics rather than supporting a philosophical argument.
(4) Corey begs the question by assuming that the order and complexity in the universe just cry out for an explanation. Here's how the design debate usually goes:
Theist: Look at all the order and complexity in the world! It just cries out for an explanation; and an intelligent designer -- God -- is probably the best explanation.
Atheist: Hmm...I just don't see it. Why is it so surprising that everything be ordered and complex? Certainly, we have no a priori reason to expect a simple universe rather than a complex one. And as far as I know, complex stuff happens all the time without someone designing it. You'll have to explain why I should find a complex world so curious.
And then it gets interesting and controversial. But Corey just leaves it at the first statement, assuming that the only objection anyone can make to his argument is that "it doesn't prove God's existence conclusively, beyond a shadow of a doubt, so I'm not convinced." But, as noted above, this is a stupid objection, and Corey is strawmanning to think that any skeptic worth her salt would make it.
(5) Corey is at his funniest when he tries to take on Hume (via Philo) in the chapter "The Case for Natural Theology." The points made, quite literally, look like that of a seven year old coming across Hume's _Dialogues_ for the first time. For example, the famous Anthropomorphism objection -- the one that if one uses the design proponent's logic consistently, you end up with a humanoid God -- is responded to as follows: "Just because the natural theologian can claim that _some_ similarities may exist between God and man, isn't to say that there is a _complete_ state of anthropomorphic concurrence between humans and their Creator." Well, obviously, it doesn't follow necessarily! The point is that, by the same analogical reasoning the design proponent uses, we can get conclusions which he does not accept. So the design proponent is either being inconsistent and arbitrary, or he knows a reason why we should the design inference and not the "nose, mouth, ears, etc." inference.
Corey also makes the error of reading Hume's suggestion that, when abstractly considering possible scenarios (or possible worlds), we have no reason for supposing any one to be more likely than the others, as the claim that "all possibilities which are not judged to be contradictory are equally probable." Corey then successfully refutes this feeble position, as if anyone actually thought it to be true.
There is much, much more hilarity to be had for the careful reader in this chapter.
(6) Corey's treatment of the problem of evil involves one paragraph of mentioning the free will theodicy and two paragraphs relating a Star Trek episode. Corey appears not to be aware of Mackie, McCloskey, Flew, Tooley, Rowe, Martin, Russell, Draper, Gale, Drange, et al.: the contemporary defenders of an argument from evil. Corey doesn't even say "a full treatment of this subject is beyond the scope of this book" or anything of the sort. He treats the evil objection as successfully dispatched.
I hope this walk through a few of the bigger problems with this book has given you a good idea of the quality of the ideas therein. Readers interested in the "fine-tuning" argument can find interesting discussion in John Leslie's _Universes_; _Physical Cosmology and Philosophy_ ed. John Leslie (especially the Richard Swinburne article); Robin le Poidevin's _Arguing for Atheism_; and Theodore Drange's _Nonbelief and Evil_ (the appendix on the argument). If you want a book-length evangelical tract that reads like a freshman philosophy student got drunk and just finished reading _The Anthropic Cosmological Principle_, pick up Corey's book.

Clear, thorough, well-illustrated. Highly recommended.
By Lucy the Bargain Hunter
This book looked too advanced for my 10 year old (maybe it isn't) but I read it with my 13 year old son. The lay-out and illustrations make this a good choice for younger teens, colorful pictures and small subject-boxes for related topics on each page make it interesting to look at, unlike the straight text of books intended for older teens. This book kept my ADHD son's attention very well, sparked questions for discussion, and offered all of the information (and more) that he was looking for. We were able to discuss embarrassing subjects objectively and discreetly with this book. The game-plan is to use "What's going on down there" as the next step, but this was a good starting point for my son. This book will be kept on hand for use with my younger children when they are old enough for it.

Useful & Readable
By A Customer
I needed a book that my nine-year-old daughter and I could use together as she enters adolescence: not too complicated, not too simple, but clear and honest in ways with which we both were comfortable. I read six other similar books before choosing Growing Up, which was the best by far. It does just what we needed it to do without getting past her level of maturity and readiness. The illustrations and explanations are easy to understand. Every issue I wanted to address is covered in this book. My daughter loves it and so do I. I commend it to other parents.

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism, by Naoki Higashida

“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
NPR • The Wall Street Journal •Bloomberg Business •Bookish

FINALIST FOR THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE FIRST BOOK AWARD • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

You’ve never read a book like The Reason I Jump. Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, it is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within.

Using an alphabet grid to painstakingly construct words, sentences, and thoughts that he is unable to speak out loud, Naoki answers even the most delicate questions that people want to know. Questions such as: “Why do people with autism talk so loudly and weirdly?” “Why do you line up your toy cars and blocks?” “Why don’t you make eye contact when you’re talking?” and “What’s the reason you jump?” (Naoki’s answer: “When I’m jumping, it’s as if my feelings are going upward to the sky.”) With disarming honesty and a generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself. His insights—into the mystery of words, the wonders of laughter, and the elusiveness of memory—are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again.

In his introduction, bestselling novelist David Mitchell writes that Naoki’s words allowed him to feel, for the first time, as if his own autistic child was explaining what was happening in his mind. “It is no exaggeration to say that The Reason I Jump allowed me to round a corner in our relationship.” This translation was a labor of love by David and his wife, KA Yoshida, so they’d be able to share that feeling with friends, the wider autism community, and beyond. Naoki’s book, in its beauty, truthfulness, and simplicity, is a gift to be shared.

Praise for The Reason I Jump

“This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice)

“Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People

“The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.)

“Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe

“Small but profound . . . [Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade

Amazon.com Review
Author One-on-One: David Mitchell and Andrew Solomon

David Mitchell is the international bestselling author of Cloud Atlas and four other novels.
Andrew Solomon is the author of several books including Far From the Tree and The Noonday Demon.

Andrew Solomon: Why do you think that such narratives from inside autism are so rare--and what do you think allowed Naoki Higashida to find a voice?

David Mitchell: Autism comes in a bewildering and shifting array of shapes, severities, colors and sizes, as you of all writers know, Dr. Solomon, but the common denominator is a difficulty in communication. Naturally, this will impair the ability of a person with autism to compose narratives, for the same reason that deaf composers are thin on the ground, or blind portraitists. While not belittling the Herculean work Naoki and his tutors and parents did when he was learning to type, I also think he got a lucky genetic/neural break: the manifestation of Naoki's autism just happens to be of a type that (a) permitted a cogent communicator to develop behind his initial speechlessness, and (b) then did not entomb this communicator by preventing him from writing. This combination appears to be rare.

AS: What, in your view, is the relationship between language and intelligence? How do autistic people who have no expressive language best manifest their intelligence?

DM: It would be unwise to describe a relationship between two abstract nouns without having a decent intellectual grip on what those nouns are. Language, sure, the means by which we communicate: but intelligence is to definition what Teflon is to warm cooking oil. I feel most at home in the school that talks about 'intelligences' rather than intelligence in the singular, whereby intelligence is a fuzzy cluster of aptitudes: numerical, emotional, logical, abstract, artistic, 'common sense' – and linguistic. In this model, language is one subset of intelligence – and, Homo sapiens being the communicative, cooperative bunch that we are, rather a crucial one, for without linguistic intelligence it's hard to express (or even verify the existence of) the other types. I guess that people with autism who have no expressive language manifest their intelligence the same way you would if duct tape were put over your mouth and a 'Men in Black'-style memory zapper removed your ability to write: by identifying problems and solving them. I want a chocky bicky, but the cookie jar's too high: I'll get the stool and stand on it. Or, Dad's telling me I have to have my socks on before I can play on his iPhone, but I'd rather be barefoot: I'll pull the tops of my socks over my toes, so he can't say they aren't on, then I'll get the iPhone. Or, This game needs me to add 7+4: I'll input 12, no, that's no good, try 11, yep...

AS: Naoki Higashida comes off as very charming, but describes being very difficult for his parents. Do you think that the slightly self-mocking humor he shows will give him an easier life than he'd have had without the charm?

DM: Definitely. Humor is a delightful sensation, and an antidote to many ills. I feel that it is linked to wisdom, but I'm neither wise nor funny enough to have ever worked out quite how they intertwine.

AS: As you translated this book from the Japanese, did you feel you could represent his voice much as it was in his native language? Did you find that there are Japanese ways of thinking that required as much translation from you and your wife as autistic ways required of the author?

DM: Our goal was to write the book as Naoki would have done if he was a 13 year-old British kid with autism, rather than a 13 year-old Japanese kid with autism. Once we had identified that goal, many of the 1001 choices you make while translating became clear. Phrasal and lexical repetition is less of a vice in Japanese –- it's almost a virtue –- so varying Naoki's phrasing, while keeping the meaning, was a ball we had to keep our eyes on. Linguistic directness can come over as vulgar in Japanese, but this is more of a problem when Japanese is the Into language than when it is the Out Of language. The only other regular head-bender is the rendering of onomatopoeia, for which Japanese has a synaesthetic genius – not just animal sounds, but qualities of light, or texture, or motion. Those puzzles were fun, though

AS: Higashida has written dream-like stories that punctuate the narrative. Can you say what functional or narrative purpose they serve in the book?

DM: Their inclusion was, I guess, an idea of the book's original Japanese editor, for whom I can't speak. But for me they provide little coffee breaks from the Q&A, as well as showing that Naoki can write creatively and in slightly different styles. The story at the end is an attempt to show us neurotypicals what it would feel like if we couldn't communicate. The story is, in a way, The Reason I Jump but re-framed and re-hung in fictional form. They also prove that Naoki is capable of metaphor and analogy.

AS: The book came out in its original form in Japan some years ago. Do you know what has happened to the author since the book was published?

DM: Naoki has had a number of other books about autism published in Japan, both prior to and after Jump. He's now about 20, and he's doing okay. He receives invitations to talk about autism at various universities and institutions throughout Japan. This involves him reading 2a presentation aloud, and taking questions from the audience, which he answers by typing. This isn't easy for him, but he usually manages okay. In terms of public knowledge about autism, Europe is a decade behind the States, and Japan's about a decade behind us, and Naoki would view his role as that of an autism advocate, to close that gap. (I happen to know that in a city the size of Hiroshima, of well over a million people, there isn't a single doctor qualified to give a diagnosis of autism.)

Review
“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

“Please don’t assume that The Reason I Jump is just another book for the crowded autism shelf. . . . This is an intimate book, one that brings readers right into an autistic mind—what it’s like without boundaries of time, why cues and prompts are necessary, and why it’s so impossible to hold someone else’s hand. Of course, there’s a wide range of behavior here; that’s why ‘on the spectrum’ has become such a popular phrase. But by listening to this voice, we can understand its echoes.”—Chicago Tribune (Editor’s Choice)

“Amazing times a million.”—Whoopi Goldberg, People

“The Reason I Jump is a Rosetta stone. . . . I had to keep reminding myself that the author was a thirteen-year-old boy when he wrote this . . . because the freshness of voice coexists with so much wisdom. This book takes about ninety minutes to read, and it will stretch your vision of what it is to be human.”—Andrew Solomon, The Times (U.K.)

“Extraordinary, moving, and jeweled with epiphanies.”—The Boston Globe

“Small but profound . . . [Naoki Higashida’s] startling, moving insights offer a rare look inside the autistic mind.”—Parade

“Surely one of the most remarkable books yet to be featured in these pages . . . With about one in 88 children identified with an autism spectrum disorder, and family, friends, and educators hungry for information, this inspiring book’s continued success seems inevitable.”—Publishers Weekly

“We have our received ideas, we believe they correspond roughly to the way things are, then a book comes along that simply blows all this so-called knowledge out of the water. This is one of them. . . . An entry into another world.”—Daily Mail (U.K.)

“Every page dismantles another preconception about autism. . . . Once you understand how Higashida managed to write this book, you lose your heart to him.”—New Statesman (U.K.)

“Astonishing. The Reason I Jump builds one of the strongest bridges yet constructed between the world of autism and the neurotypical world. . . . There are many more questions I’d like to ask Naoki, but the first words I’d say to him are ‘thank you.’”—The Sunday Times (U.K.)

“This is a guide to what it feels like to be autistic. . . . In Mitchell and Yoshida’s translation, [Higashida] comes across as a thoughtful writer with a lucid simplicity that is both childlike and lyrical. . . . Higashida is living proof of something we should all remember: in every autistic child, however cut off and distant they may outwardly seem, there resides a warm, beating heart.”—Financial Times (U.K.)

“Higashida’s child’s-eye view of autism is as much a winsome work of the imagination as it is a user’s manual for parents, carers and teachers. . . . This book gives us autism from the inside, as we have never seen it. . . . [Higashida] offers readers eloquent access into an almost entirely unknown world.”—The Independent (U.K.)

“The Reason I Jump is awise, beautiful, intimate and courageous explanation of autism as it is lived every day by one remarkable boy. Naoki Higashida takes us ‘behind the mirror’—his testimony should be read by parents, teachers, siblings, friends, and anybody who knows and loves an autistic person. I only wish I’d had this book to defend myself when I was Naoki’s age.”—Tim Page, author of Parallel Play and professor of journalism and music at the University of Southern California

“[Higashida] illuminates his autism from within. . . . Anyone struggling to understand autism will be grateful for the book and translation.”—Kirkus Reviews

From the Publisher
“A rare road map into the world of severe autism . . . [Higashida’s] insights . . . unquestionably give those of us whose children have autism just a little more patience, allowing us to recognize the beauty in ‘odd’ behaviors where perhaps we saw none.”—People (3-1/2 stars)

“Like millions of parents confronted with autism, Mitchell and his wife found themselves searching for answers and finding few that were satisfactory. Help, when it arrived, came not from some body of research but from the writings of a Japanese schoolboy, Naoki Higashida. The Reason I Jump . . . is a book that acts like a door to another logic, explaining why an autistic child might flap his hands in front of his face, disappear suddenly from home—or jump.”—The Telegraph (U.K.)

“This is a wonderful book. I defy anyone not to be captivated, charmed and uplifted by it.”—Evening Standard (London)

“Whether or not you have experienced raising a child who is autistic . . . this little book, which packs immeasurable honesty and truth into its pages, will simply detonate any illusions, assumptions, and conclusions you've made about the condition. . . . What Higashida has done by communicating his reality is to offer carers a way forward and offer teachers new ways of working with the children, and thus opening up and expanding the possibilities for autistic kids to feel less alone. All that in less than 200 pages? What an accomplishment.”—The Herald (Dublin)

“The Reason I Jump is an enlightening, touching and heart-wrenching read. Naoki asks for our patience and compassion—after reading his words, it’s impossible to deny that request.”—Yorkshire Post (U.K.)

My Brother Also Jumps
By C. Wong
I read a lot of books about autism because my brother is severely autistic. I am very thankful to Nagoki Higashida for answered questions that I have about my brother's behavior and the way that he thinks. And also answering some questions that had not even occurred to me! His voice came through this book as very genuine and I have recognized some of the same feelings in my brother as Nagoki Higashida.

In fact I wish that my brother had the experience of being trained to use the special keyboard. So many things are locked inside for my brother but Nagoki been has let some of them out via the keyboard.
My brother also jumps. He always does this just before he starts a walk. He also loves to walk in places filled with nature. He wanted to go to a park when I asked him where on our latest visit. I have read quite a few books written by Asperger's but this one by a boy who has autism rings home for me. My brother can speak but usually he does not initiate any conversation, he is limited to a few words of a reply. I can see the struggle that he goes through when he is trying to "grab" something to say.

I was aware of the overload of senses but I didn't realize that the floors could be tilting for him. That must be why he touches the wall here and there trying to get some balance.

I thought that the author really conveyed how regular people can hurt people with autism's feelings. I knew that from being with my brother. I have heard people talk about my brother in front of him and that is mean. I know the author would feel the same way.

This book is very valuable for understanding autism and I wish that caregivers in group homes and others who work with people who have autism would read this book.

When I read this book, I truly wanted more. I am hoping that there will be a place in the future where we can send out questions to you. I have so much more that I want to learn. If you have a family member who has autism please read this book.

I received this book as a win from FirstReads but that in no way influenced my thoughts or feelings in the review.

I can't speak highly enough about this book. For ...
By Roy Larke
I can't speak highly enough about this book. For any parent with a child with autism, reading the pages written so painstakingly by Higashida will bring insight and understanding. We bought multiple copies to distribute to teachers and carers as a result. Chapters are short and answer specific questions about behaviour and thinking. It demonstrates that not everything you see through "normal" eyes is inexplicable or even "abnormal" and that it is the point of view that is often wrong. This book explains this thinking succinctly and wth considerable charm and elegance. It is also written from the heart.

David Mitchell should be commended for bringing the book to the English language. He's a master of language and writing in any case (if you haven't read 'Bone Clocks' yet, let alone Cloud Atlas, grab them now!), but more than the style, which is simple, straightforward and thoroughly meaningful, it is the practicality of this book that is so important. It's a tool that anyone connect to the care of people with Autism should read and use.

Fantastic book with tons of helpful information for those who live, work or around people on the spectrum.
By connie
I work with students with Autisum. I found this book very helpful coming from someone who lives it daily. Some of what the author had written I already used with these beautiful people. After working with students who are on the spectrum for 20 years, I even found helpful information that I wasn't doing. I passed the book around with all that work in my program. Each one of us found this helpful and feel everyone that works with people on the spectrum need to read this book. Thank-you!
