Mahdism has manifested from Morocco to Indonesia, from the 8th to the 21st centuries—and as a key belief of Islam, shows no signs of disappearing in the face of modernity. As the Islamic year 1500 (2076 AD) approaches, apocalyptic fervor in all branches of Islam will only increase—empowering Sunni groups like ISIS and, in particular, the Islamic Republic of Iran. This book should prove helpful to anyone wishing to explore these aspects of Islam, and why US policy makers are so woefully unprepared to deal with modern manifestations of apocalyptic Islam. This book is by an expert on Islamic history, who has been researching and writing on eschatological beliefs in the world’s second-largest religion since the 1990s—long before the mainstream media jumped on this bandwagon with ISIS. Dr. Timothy Furnish holds a PhD in Islamic history from Ohio State University, and his doctoral dissertation was on Sunni Mahdist movements (using Arabic sources). He is a former US Army Arabic linguist, a recovering college history professor and a sometime media commentator. He has consulted on Islamic world issues to US Special Operations Command, and to the intelligence community. His other books are Holiest Wars: Islamic Mahdis, their Jihads, and Osama bin Laden (2005) and Sects, Lies, and the Caliphate: Ten Years of Observations on Islam (2015).

Background and understanding of ISIS mindset

Having read Dr. Furnish's first book (Holiest Wars - based on his doctoral thesis) and now reading this one, I can tell you that if you want to know the who, what, when, where, and WHY of ISIS, then this is the book to get. It's easy to read, despite the numerous sects and Arabic names that sometimes tangle while reading as they are all new to me, but it's insightful and enlightening. Seeking to understand has lead me to read a number of books on Islam over the past decade. It's not easy unravelling it all but if you have time, it's worth the knowledge you will gain.

I am currently reading the Kindle version of Dr.Tim Furnish's book. Considering current affairs all over the world, especially the Islamic terrorism, I believe the book to be extremely enlightening, especially about the intent ions of ISIS. Dr.Furnish is an expert on Islamic history and both reads and speaks Arabic. I trust his views. I knew Dr. Furnish as a boy who grew up in my hometown. He is a Christian man, and I highly recommend his book. Watch for his next one.

A good book for graduate students, useful as reference book

I bought this book in order to understand better my PhD courses. I must admit that after a few tries, I went back to Davidson and Mackinnon manual and to Hamilton's Time Series Bible. It could be seen as an intermediate level book, which is a main problem: undergraduates (except for the advanced ones) won't feel comfortable with the level of the book; applied econometrists will think perhaps that greene's book covers all the main topics but not profoundly enough (In the unit root chapter for example, the demonstration of the unit root test -Dickey-Fuller- is not present). As some of the other reviewers, I agree with the fact that, covering so many topics, the organization of the book could be improved. The mathematical tools explanation is a very clever idea; everybody lacking mathematical knowledge should read the first chapters. Some of my teachers appreciate (and I agree with them, without being an expert of that topic) particularly the panel regression chapter. I think this book fits better the graduate needs, especially those being, or wanting to be applied econometricians. If you are looking for an advanced theoretical manual, Greene's is not the best choice; if you are interested in having a -slightly more than- fairly good understanding of what is done currently in the field, then grab this book. But be aware, if you want to feel comfortably when reading it, you should be familiarized with the field. I recommend Johnston and Dinardo's Manual and Walter Ender's Manual (for time series only). Finally, it must be said that the fourth edition doesn't differ too much from the third one.

A poor book at a rich price.

I own many econometrics books and this is by and large the worst I had (I sold it at once after the course I HAD to buy it for, while I kept all others). It seems it covers everything while, in fact, almost all results are just presented rather than analyzed, let alone analyzed in depth. The best thing about the book is probably the table of contents, as one gets an overall idea of what econometrics deals with today. In fact, no other book aims at covering so much. Otherwise, it looks, feels and performs like an undergraduate text ...
On top of that, this edition in particular is especially bad: the blue ink stains your hands, and there are MORE typos than in the previous one. If you absolutely want to get it, buy the third edition (if you find one used).
If you want more serious general econometrics, have a look at Davidson and MacKinnon's book. If you want asymptotic theory, get White's. For time series, Hamilton's or Brockwell and Davis'.

About the 4th ed.:

I've just bought the 4th edition. At my first glance it differs not much from the 3rd one, except: [1] a CD-ROM is attached; [2] typos have been corrected; [3] the WHOLE content is blue-printed instead of dark-printed, which I find uncomfortable (not used to) in reading it.
The rest is similar to its 3rd edition -- poor in organization, as I mentioned before. In my professor's and my views, its 2nd edition is much better.

Very useful for the anesthesia oral exam.

This is a long overdue review of this book considering I have been recommending this book to my residents for years. I believe this textbook can be very useful when preparing for the anesthesia oral exam. The information is presented in a way that is very close to what examiners are looking for; an algorithmic approach with detailed footnotes. Also note this is a fourth edition that is always a good sign for a textbook.
