Pretty Basic Overview

I would disagree that this would be good for a communication major as previously stated. I am taking a Small Groups Communication class which requires this book. This book is terribly basic, and covers nothing in depth to any useful degree. It gives you a lot of the PSY 101 feeling of deja vu. Between PSY 101, Business Ethics, and Writing for Professional I feel all the material in this book has already been covered in those class. I just read the bolded words and move on to the next chapter. If you are fairly early in your college career you may have to actually read this book, if you are further along and see a course with this book you are probably in for a easy ride.

John Polkinghorne was from 1968 to 1979 Professor of Mathematical Physics in the University of Cambridge, and later president of Queen's College. This is NOT "Quantum Theory for Dummies"--but it's good.

This pocket-sized, 92-page text--113 pages with appendices and index--professes to be a "very short introduction" to an understanding of quantum theory, to the unseen world that's so many millions of times smaller than even atoms.

It's not at all a bad summary of the field of quantum mechanics, written fairly lucidly, concisely, and with interest, but I'd have to say it's lacking as an introduction to the subject, in that it really does assume its readers are intelligent people with something of a science background. Do not buy this expecting it to be QUANTUM THEORY FOR DUMMIES, because it's still fairly dense and heavy, and not written as clearly or as startlingly as much of Stephen Hawking's stuff. To some readers, this assumption of their intelligence may be refreshing, and it is to a degree, but with a subject as complex and bizarre as quantum mechanics, most non-scientists will need as much help as they can get, help not necessarily to be found in here.

I do have to say, though, that this is a book worth reading, and, then, re-reading. After I read it, I went back through and looked up a few of the more major concepts--quantum entanglement, in which two particles that interact will continue to affect each other no matter how far apart they're separated; Schr�dinger's Cat and the idea of a state between life and death, between here and there, between being and non-being; Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and how you can't have a knowledge of both position and momentum of a particle; et cetera--and just that brief re-reading was a huge help to me.

The book will teach you a lot about the subject, and will give you a good start toward further educating your knowledge of this awesome and frustrating topic, this topic which has already done so much toward unlocking the secrets of our existence and our universe--and toward confusing everyone.

Its glossary is lacking, its author has a subtle but evident Christian bias, but overall it's a good little book, and I enjoyed it. I recommend it.

This book is just an assembly words dont buy this. Buy a proper textbook giving much more. Because you will have to leaf through it many times to really access this wonderful topic (if presented in a proper way). Buy the real stuff.

Getting some good lessons from this book

I'm going through this now. The first part I've gone through is the history of Quantum Theory and it is excellent. The second half looks somewhat difficult to read but I'll give it a try. I'm a former science teacher having had a good chunk of chemistry, physics, and biology courses in my life so I can follow most of it SO FAR.

He did help me immensely already with one question of confusion regarding the double slit experiment, a classic quantum "mystery." Simple explanations of this experiment (ones you see on YouTube such a the "quantum professor") always imply that this experiment has been done historically by placing "detectors"at the slits to measure which slit the photons or electrons went through. All the simple discussions and apparently poorly researched discussions imply this has been done. Polkinhome does not say it has been done but states that "suppose we were to modify the experiment by putting a detector"..........This is to say he made it appear as though it might be done, not that it had been done. And this book is a 2002 publish date book. So I immediately questioned whether the detector thing had been done as is often stated and assumed in some trivial videos on YouTuble. It apparently has only been a "thought experiment" as noted in Wikipedia. So, apparently it has never been done because the only way you could detect a particle would be to absorb it and that would defeat the purpose of the experiment and make it unintelligible and meaningless.Wikipedia (an obvious 3rd level source) So he has done me a great service to start seeking for original, first level source material, and to avoid the 2nd and 3rd level source material. Now I'm into reading the delayed choice eraser types of double slit experiments which are more sophisticated and I'm still hunting for actually, "real" references that did the so called "detector" part. While hunting for the detector data I've seen statements that another famous YouTube video with the physicist Thom Campbell discussing the delayed choice quantum eraser experiment (which reinforces the idea of detectors at the slits) is phony in the sense that Campbell is a quack, some kind of new world nut case with some kind of crazed view of consciousness and quantum physics that is unscientific. So this book has given me a great historical look, triggered me to find some better details of experiments and I hope I can finish this book and learn more. I'm at the beginning of understanding quantum physics and this book is an excellent start. Polkinghome has stimulated me immensely to get at the truth of the experimental history. This is a difficult subject that many hear have indicated.

Entertaining!

This is the first book I would read in this genre so I wasn't quite sure what to expect and my assessment may be tainted by the fact that I have no similar reads to compare it with. I was relieved to see that though it did have street vulgarity in it as expected, it was not so much that I had to stop reading the book. I had that concern.

The story was enjoyable but I did not feel it was dramatic enough for urban/street fiction. It was not so captivating that I read it straight through in a day like I could have and I expected it to be sizzling! The basic storyline was alright but I could pick out some flaws in the plot. The timelines were clear and not confusing. There were certain inconsistencies that were not true to life or consistent with the character and the particular situation. There was way too much conversation about who the main character killed and how. Regardless of who you are talking to, people do not have repeated conversations about murder that they committed and still manage to stay out of jail. There were too many people that knew it happened for her to not be behind bars for it. That would not fly in real life. That's just one example of an inconsistency in my opinion. The speed of reconciliation with certain family members and Diamond was another scenario that was not true to life in my opinion. I cannot say much more than that without giving away the story.

I also felt the synopsis gave away too much information about the storyline and took away the element of suspense. It read more like a summary of the book but with information near the end that should have kept us guessing if it was not included in the synopsis. I was able to figure out a major twist in the plot very early on in the book because of this. The synopsis should not have said anything about Black going to jail or Money setting his plan in motion.

Black Diamond 2 however did make me want to Read Black Diamond to which it's a sequel so that was good. There were a little too many typos and grammatical errors for my liking and that made it read like a self published book to me. Not sure if this is right or not but I have certain expectations of traditional publishers because of the resources that are available before the final product gets on the market as compared with a self published author without the same resources in which the book may still be somewhat raw even in its finished form.

I would give it 3.5 out 5 stars but since that is not an option, I'll go with 4 stars. 3 stars would not be fair because it was not a bad read; it just did not blow me away.

This book is not what I expected! It also took me awhile to get into it and remember the events of the first, maybe because I took to long to get this one. Anyhow, it's not what I expected.....a ill boarding. And of course leading to the third part....hopefully it's better.

Not @ all what i expected . . .

Could this book have been any more lame, smh( shaking my head). After reading part 1 Black Diamond, i figured this 1 was gonna go hard wit it. But i was oh so wrong. It didnt hold my interest @ all. And i honestly dont know how i made it 2 the end. I guess it was just my curiosty that was killing me, or the thought that i just knew it would get better. But i was totally wrong. Their were quite a few parts that seemed 2 unreal, & made me wanna gag. After she gotten released i felt she would have learned her lesson & go anotha direction, but what do ya know, i was wrong again. Ump ump ump this book could havebeen a whole lot better. Some may have liked it, but 2 me it was mad boring & didnt make me feel any emotions & was kind of predictable. 2 me this just wasnt a good read @ all, but if u wanna give it a try than be my guess.

Excellent Undergrad Text

Overall this is an excellent text for an undergraduate level course. It is the 3rd book on the subject that I've read and the best of the lot. It is much more conprehensive than the others, but does not get into the details of some graduate level books.

The content deserves a 5 star, but I gave it 4 stars overall because of a couple shortcomings. The graphics don't convey the 3 dimensionality of the anatomy. All of my anatomy texts do a far better job representing internal structures, and this becomes extremely important.

2nd, there are some areas overemphasized, some omissions, and a problem with the order of presentation. The chapter on attention tells me that one of the authors researches in this area. Sorry, it doesn't warrant a chapter. You know you're on the wrong track when you spend an entire page just explaining the minutiae of a single experiment. Second, there was no mention of intelligence. Yes it's a hotbutton issue. No excuse for ignoring it. Finally, issues were raised, such as fear or emotions, that use the same structure. It would be helpful to discuss the anatomy in more detail early on instead of introducing structures piecemeal.

Overall an excellent book.

It's a great book for general neuroscience courses

Neuroscience is my future career, and I absolutely value this book. It explains the brain amazingly well for those unfamiliar with the details. Figures and illustrations are fabulous. The text is clear, concise, and thorough. I t always kept my attention while reading. It's a great book for general neuroscience courses! I plan to keep it on my bookshelf for a while!

Christmas! M�nage! Sweet Romance!

MISTLETOE & MENAGE is a hot yet sweet anthology with five m�nage stories. There is a historical romance, a paranormal romance, and three contemporary romances on this book. They are all sweet, and portraits Christmas as the time of love and second chances. All m�nage tales of this anthology are M/F/M.

These stories are good for new beginners of m�nage read. The passionate scenes are not overly descriptive and a very romantic vibe permeates the relationships. Most of the characters are old time friends finally acting upon their attraction. They are all in love with each other when they decide to jump into this kinky relationship, and there is always mutual respect and trust.

I have two main problems with these stories. First, they are overly sweet. When I choose to read a m�nage book, I expect the heat to be high, and the scenes to be intensely kinky. Second, I felt these stories move too fast, which made them all not really believable. I like to connect with characters, and to relate with them somehow.

A Little Elfin Magic by Mellanie Szereto is my favorite story of the anthology. The trio is a bit more kinky and risque then the rest. Also, I believe the author handles the transition well with the pace of the story, making it seems more real.

You may read this book if you like to connect Christmas time as the time for love. You should read this if you are looking for a fast fun read, but you MUST read this if you are looking for experimenting with m�nage reads, but don't want to start with something so racy.

Simply a beautiful, brilliant, artful book. Fluidly written, incredibly well-researched, so visually whipsmart. Also a true rarity: I can't think of a single place where you will find this topic, rich and sprawling, so elegantly distilled, and to such delightful effect. A history, a tutorial, an excavation, an inspired miscellany, all at once. A must-read for anyone interested in visual culture, fashion, design.
