Loved this book.

I loved this book. The author puts you right there. You can close your eyes and envision the sights, smells, and sounds of the Civil War. He puts you inside that Army Hospital and all the pain and horrors that go along with that. You feel those battles on the front lines that these soldiers faced. This is all through the eyes of young soldier Wil Harleck. You agonize with him over his struggles with himself and sometimes his own faith. You are constantly pulling for him and his beloved family he left back home. A true account of the human side of war. I look forward to more books from this author.

A wonderful read! A first-person account of a young man's coming of age in the harsh realities of the Civil War, interspersed with letters to and from home and informative historical synopses that set the stage of each chapter. I'm not an avid fiction reader, nor do I consider myself a Civil War buff, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story! Steve's passion for the subject and his utilization of the periodic vernacular helped me to hear the southern drawl in Will's voice as he recounted the hardships of wartime duty and joys of personal and spiritual triumphs. I highly recommend! Bravo Steve!

Great book

I'm not much of a civil war fan but Steve's book was very enjoyable read. This was an awesome book. Steve did a great job of crafting this story around the actual events of the civil war. We learn real quick about how bad things were for the soldiers of the south, like running out of supplies and simple things like shoes. Steve did a great job of bringing the characters to life and how the characters grew throughout the book. even if your not a civil war buff you will still enjoy this book! Well done, Steve!

Fun And Fact Filled

Not only is this one amazingly info-packed book, I found it a fascinating and very enjoyable read on many levels, and I wouldn't normally categorize myself as a "gear head" (although I think this book has converted me...). Although the chapter on Vintage Pedals is fascinating, I really appreciated the author's inclusion of an extensive chapter covering Current Pedals too. I agree with his view that "better pedals are being made now than ever before," and the newer effects often don't get their due. If you don't have $500 to spend on a rare, noisy, expensive but occasionally cool sounding box from the late `60s, Guitar Effects Pedals will point you to some alternatives, and will explain why the new options might even be more satisfying. On top of all this, the History, Tech, and Interview chapters are really useful and very entertaining. I have to say, I was a little puzzled - even stunned - by another reviewer's claim that this book "wasn't well written..." Huh? It flows beautifully, tells you what you need to know, and keeps you gripped along the way (then again, I believe that reviewer admits to being a writing teacher - kind of says it all). On top of that, the reviewer makes odd claims that seem to indicate he didn't really read (or understand) the book: he says that the JRC4558 chip isn't covered, but I found tons of info on it in here, and he also seems dismayed that the book didn't teach him how to build effects or something, where I don't find that angle promoted anywhere on the cover or inside, and that's not the stated intention of this book. Overall, I can't imagine packing more information - or a better read - into the pages allotted here, and we all know that no publisher is going to attempt to even print a 1,000-page to-it-all effects book. Ultimately, this is a book that every guitar player, pedalhead or not, would love to have on his or her shelf.

The only bad thing about this book is now I'm scouring eBay and music stores to add to my pedal collection! The CD was super helpful too. Analogman's book is a little more complete but a lot more expensive.

So so good and funny, all ages can appreciate.

Our household didn't think this book would ever be released! My boys (12 & 8) loved the first one and could not wait for the second, it did not disappoint! My 12yo actually read it twice and giggled through it just as hard the second time! So, when can we expect book 3???? (please) My boys like it better than Big Nate even.

Funny, but ultimately disappointing

Niles and Miles are back. This ranking team, known as The Terrible Two, are ready for another year of pranking their school, especially their power-loving principal, Principal Barkin. Unfortunately, one of their pranks leads Principal Barkin to losing his job, and now he's been replaced with a much more stern principal, who is out to shut down all pranking.

I straight-up loved Book 1. It was so fun! I frequently recommend it to my 4th and 5th grade students who are looking for something funny to read, and so far they have all loved it. So my students and I were super excited for Book 2. The first third or so of The Terrible Two Gets Worse totally lived up to my expectations. I Laughed Out Loud on almost every page.

Unfortunately, I have to break the news to them that I didn't end up loving it, and that I'm not sure I'll get a copy for our classroom. Here's why -

The pranks in the first book were elaborate, creative, and harmless. There were awesome diagrams accompanying several, and the authors did a brilliant job of incorporating the cows of Yawnee Valley. The first book was outrageous, and that's why so many of us love it.

This second installment simply doesn't do the same things. The pranks are too typical, easy for kids to duplicate, and far from harmless. They put peppers in people's drinks, pull the fire alarm, and drop someone's pants. I've seen this book referred to by another reviewer as mean-spirited, and I totally agree. To make it worse, there are no cows! And no elaborate diagrams! Where is the creativity? Where is the outrageousness?

Overall, I'm hoping that this is just a Second Book Slump, and that the next installment will revive the potential of Book 1.

"Susan M. Turley" is an experienced educator and practitioner in many areas of health care. She has worked in acute care, managed care, long-term care, and the physician's office and has held positions in nursing, quality management, infection control, medical assisting, medical transcription, and health information management.

As an educator, she has taught college and community college courses in pharmacology and pathophysiology. She has presented numerous staff inservices in acute care, managed care, and long-term care settings and co-presented numerous all-day seminars for teachers throughout the country. She codeveloped the curriculum and training materials for a nationally distributed medical transcription training program and currently works as a consultant in curriculum development and instructor for a distance learning school with health information management and medical transcription programs.

She is the author of numerous medical and educational articles for national journals, and co-author of two funded national healthcare grants.

She has a Master of Arts degree in adult education, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and national certification in the fields of health information management and medical transcription.

Her writing is well-known for its clarity in presenting technically difficult material and for a special blend of in-depth coverage that also includes humor and interesting anecdotes to keep interest high.

Wonderful textbook, but a bit dated

This book is one of the fundamental cornerstones of academic nuclear engineering. I just finished reading it from cover to cover (studying for my phd candidacy exam). The lack of commas after prepositional phrases drove me crazy, but it's definitely a thorough introduction to many different nuclear topics.

In my opinion, it's getting a little dated. For example, the first page says "It is anticipated that some 500 nuclear power plants will be installed in the United States alone by the year 2000...". The book is nearly 40 years old now, but a suitable replacement just isn't out there. I also see a lot of room for improvement on the questions at the end of each chapter - they're often too vague and high-level. Regardless, I highly recommend this book for any future nuclear engineer's textbook collection.

It shouldn't be used as an undergraduate textbook (though it was for me, unfortunately). If you're looking for an easier textbook with the same material, I highly suggest "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering" by Lamarsh.

Because this book contains adequate physics and mathematics for a good overview introduction to nuclear fission reactor physics/engineering I consider it as an excellent book in its theme.However I think it will be good to include also information on nuclear fission reactors electronic systems,etc.

The definitive text on Nuclear Engineering

Chances are good that if you are studying nuclear engineering you will encounter this book and many others that reference it, and for good reason. This book is well written in a conversational style that explains difficult concepts clearly with a dash of humor. The book has not been updated in something like 30 years but the science has not changed and I have found no major mistakes or typos.

This book is well worth buying if you are a little ways in to your studies, but probably a bit over the head of a beginning student.

About the Author

Marjorie A. Pett, MStat, DSW, is a Research Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, having been on the faculty since 1980. By her own admission, she is a “collector” of academic degrees: BA (Brown University), MS in sociology (University of Stockholm, Sweden), MSW (Smith College), DSW (University of Utah), and MStat (Biostatistics) (University of Utah).

Dr. Pett has a strong commitment to facilitating the practical application of statistics in the social, behavioral, and biological sciences, especially among practitioners in health care settings. She has designed and taught graduate courses to students from a variety of disciplines at the beginning and advanced levels, including research design and data management, parametric and nonparametric statistics, biostatistics, multivariate statistics, instrument development, and factor analysis. She has tried to approach the teaching of statistics with humor and from a clinician’s perspective and has been the recipient of several distinguished teaching awards both at the College and University levels.

Her most recent research interests include the development of client-centered assessment tools and interventions to evaluate and enhance health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for persons with intellectual disabilities. She is the author of numerous research articles and chapters, and is an author of the Sage publication, Making Sense of Factor Analysis: The Use of Factor Analysis for Instrument Development in Health Care Research.

Dr John Sullivan has been a professor of management for over 26 years at San Francisco State University. A superb book on factor analysis

This is a great book for those who are new to factor analysis. Although written from the perspective of a health care researcher, it's easily accessible to folks in other disciplines (I'm in educational leadership). I especially appreciated the step-by-step process for doing factor analysis from beginning to end, along with thorough explanations of various choices (and why you'd make them) along the way.

This book is awesome!

This is the best book I've found on factor analysis - I am not mathematically inclined, but I do want to understand "the sense" of factor analysis. This book is detailed, clear, with concise summaries as well as detailed explanations of the matrix algebra and math of factor analyses. It contains clear and useful diagrams. I have checked out several other books on factor analysis - this is the one that finally explained the subject to me.

A First-Rate Introduction to a Tough Topic
By not a natural
Many of us who have used factor analysis had only a vague notion of what we were doing, namely trying to reduce a large number of items into a smaller, less unwieldy, more readily interpretable set of variables. With user-friendly software such as SPSS, the mechanics -- entering items, extracting factors, rotation of factors, saving factor scores if needed, and calculating reliability coefficients -- are sufficiently obvious to permit rough and ready, sometimes quite useful factor solutions that provide insights that otherwise would not have been available.

Without studying factor analysis as such, however, such quick and dirty applications often yield misleading results, something that anonymous reviewers of submitted manuscripts will be only too happy to acerbically explain. In my own work, I stared off routinely using principal components analysis, the SPSS default option for factor analysis, but had no notion that principal components analysis and factor analysis in its various forms are mathematically distinct. Principal components uses all three sources of variance -- shared, random, and error variance in formulating components, while factor analysis uses only shared variance. One common outcome is that principal components will typically yield a misleadingly clear-cut solution, while factor analysis rightly yields a solution that requires more interpretative effort.

Furthermore, when trying to reduce a comparatively large number of items to a small set of themes or variables, we get our most informative results when the analysis is limited to shared variance. Thus, while principal components has its uses, one of the many forms of factor analysis, say alpha factoring, is usually better suited to the task at hand.

Before I read Making Sense of Factor Analysis, I had a vague notion of how factor extraction was accomplished. Having read the book, I can now understand the procedures pretty clearly. I find the regression-based approaches intuitively appealing, and this book explains them very well.

Rotation of factors was something I previously did ritualistically, but I had no idea what was really going on. Having read this book, however, a good deal of the mystery has been dispelled. I must admit, however, that while I can now see how rotation of factors is accomplished, and I understand that some factors yield orthogonal solutions while others yield factors that are associated, the reason why rotated factors are generally more readily interpretable still eludes me.

Furthermore, I have done factor analyses in which the non-rotated factors were more readily interpretable than the rotated ones. The book is silent as to whether or not rotation is a requirement in all instances.

Finally, when looking for composite variables to insert as an independent variable in a regression equation, I have sought and found single-factor solutions. These can be very illuminating, yielding powerful explanatory variables or predictors. Given the scale-construction nature of this book, however, these useful procedures are not discussed. (By the way, single factors cannot be rotated.)

Factor analysis is a complex statistical tool that comes in explanatory and confirmatory forms. No one text can do justice to the entire topic, but Making Sense of Factor Analysis gives most of us most of what we need. If you're put off by the seemingly extraneous material at the beginning of the book, stay with it. It turns out to be really quite pertinent and definitely worth reading,

This is a very good textbook, and the health-related questionnaire that the authors produce is exemplary, a tribute to their patient and methodical application of this complex statistical technique. Nevertheless, if you come away from the book with the feeling that factor analysis is not foreign to guess-work and fishing, and that some crucial issues remain the subject of heated debate, you're right.
