From Publishers Weekly
The central character of this multiracial, feminist, lesbian vampire romance fantasy travels through time and leads multiple lives. Throughout her lives, Gilda is a woman of African descent with strong feminist traits and a sense of loyalty to her friends and family, both mortal and immortal. In her first life, she is a runaway slave in Louisiana in 1850, not yet a vampire, not yet named, who stabs a rapist/bounty hunter in self-defense. Rescued and adopted by Gilda, a vampire who runs a brothel, she soon becomes a vampire herself and adopts Gilda's name. Subsequent lives take Gilda to California in 1890, Missouri in 1921, Massachusetts in 1955, New York in 1981 where she does a stint as a cabaret singer, and into the future in New Hampshire in 2020 and up to the year 2050. Gomez provides an unusual twist to the erotic vampire novel, introducing issues of race and sexual preference, but there is no attempt to address these issues except as fodder for an ultimately uninteresting romance novel. This is Gomez's first novel; she is a poet and the author of Flamingoes and Bears.

Review
The Gilda Stories is an elegant, sensual, and natural vampire fantasy. Time-traveling from Southern slavery in 1850 to environmental devastation 200 years later, Gilda is the quintessential outsider seeking community. Jewelle Gomez combines a natural flair for storyteller with an ability to weave tapestries of personality that grab the mind's imagination and won't let go. A memorable story, deftly told. -- Midwest Book Review

Vampiric feeding as "sharing," water as a convincing threat.
By Renee Byrd
(With special guest appearance by Alice Dunbar Nelson!)
I've tried loaning this book to four different people. None of them seem interested in it until I start giving away what I consider to be the good bits. You've been warned.

Gomez writes feminist vampires and portrays a kinder, gentler vampirism than I'm used to. They have small clan-like societies based on philosophy of life rather than ability. The act of drinking blood isn't a near-rape for one clan, but a "sharing." These vampires leave hopes, dreams and inspiration to the random people upon whom they feed. Rather than murder, Gilda herself may have saved a life through her hunger.

The book follows Gilda from the late 1800's through to the early 2000's. It also follows her small cell of vampire family from a time when they were the stuff of legend to their exposure.

This is a fine book. It's the first I've read that actually uses the idea of running water as a problem for vampires, or the passing on of a name and legend from one vampire to the other. Gomez's writing is clear and somewhat poetic, and her ideas are sweet enough to even make the legendary bloodsucking demons of the night seem like kind, gentle, neighborly folk. Please read it.

An Elegant Vampire Twist
By Little Old Me
Gilda begins her tales as a nameless runaway slave in Louisiana during the 1850's. This, however, is only the precursor to Jewelle Gomez's fantastic collection of a refreshing take on the fabled vampire. The subject matter captivated me at first - a novel about a black lesbian vampire in the 1850's, but I found that first impressions can be deceiving and that The Gilda Stories was much more than a series of horror fiction. Jewelle Gomez sets up a much different hierarchy of the vampiric world - where vampires are humane noble creatures, who only kill in self-defense, only take the blood they need and always leave something in exchange. One will find that the true victims in The Gilda Stories are the vampires themselves, trying to co-exist peacefully with the world they inhabit.
The character, Gilda is a wonderful heroine. Her stories are independent of each other, seperated by decades at a time, as she wanders across the United States in search of a sense of family, home and the love of her tutor, the Native American woman, Bird. One must realize that this story is not just a vampire's memoirs. Her stories deal with racism, class and the bridges in between. Gilda herself, is a minority amongst a minority - being one of the only black vampires in existence. The elements of sexuality deeply suggest Gilda's lesbianism, though the fine lines of sexuality blur amongst the vampire community. Much like in Anne Rice's interpretation, sexuality and romantic partnerships are conjoined by mental bonds and the ideals of companionship. Gilda's true inability is to love or make love to a mortal, but amongst the vampiric community, it seems that either gender is fair game.
Each of Jewelle Gomez's stories seem independent of each other, despite Gilda's memories of past characters. While some of the stories are center around the dangers in the vampire community and can be quite action packed, other stories bare deep into Gilda's connection with others. Gilda's and Bird's relationship center on most of the sub-plot. Bird acted as mother, teacher and at times lover to Gilda, but abandons her early on. Gilda laments on Bird's disappearance for much of the book and Bird's name resurfaces amongst other members of the vampire aristocracy and even shows up to help Gilda kill a ruthless foe in the Boston chapter. Still, Gilda's history is more nomadic than anything and the reader will see sides of the world through both innocent and wise eyes.
I highly recommend this novel to anyone who is a fan of the vampire genre. I found The Gilda Stories to be a most enjoyable alternative to the mass endeavor that is Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. The Gilda Stories is well written, engaging and offers a lighter tones to a very dark world, but still installs plenty of mystery and suspense. This is a milestone for the feminist press, Firebrand Books, and is a must-read for the new young generations of readers and writers.

Race, Gender, Class, Sexuality, and Family Values
By Professor
Definitely kinder, gentler vampires than vampire fans may be used to, and that's a wonderful recommendation in itself. In addition, the politics of race, gender, class, and sexuality abound. Black women's communities, women and work, lesbianism and women's friendships, black activism, and vampire subculture-as-gay/lesbian subculture are all parts of the impressive multicultural politics of this book. It's a great read, as well. My only critique is of what I consider its ultimate political statement as the novel ends: "family is the most important thing" (over work, politics, etc.). Though the novel redefines family in progressive ways, the emphasis on family is still a tad too conservative for me. However, this may also be a reflection of my personal jewish (middle-class) feminist politics meeting a form of black feminist politics and colliding a bit based upon race and class difference. Buy this compelling and important book and read it, then judge for yourself.

Many are familiar with Joseph Campbell's theory of the hero's journey, the idea that every man from Moses to Hercules grows to adulthood while battling his alter-ego. This book explores the universal heroine's journey as she quests through world myth. Numerous stories from cultures as varied as Chile and Vietnam reveal heroines who battle for safety and identity, thereby upsetting popular notions of the passive, gentle heroine. Only after she has defeated her dark side and reintegrated can the heroine become the bestower of wisdom, the protecting queen and arch-crone.

Review
Frankel, a storyteller, essayist, and novelist, seeks to throw off the oppression of our culture's obsession with hero myths as she reveals the heroine...as an embodiment of one of the goddess archetypes.
-Reference & Research Book News, Inc.

Ever since I used Christopher Vogler's The Hero's Journey to plot my first novel, I have wanted this book. I sensed that my heroine's journey didn't quite fit the outline, and now Valerie Frankel shows why.
--Monterey Bay RWA Monarch News

Frankel's book is so enthusiastically written, so thoroughly researched, and so articulately argued that it leaves the reader anticipating each subsequent chapter, enjoying each exemplary tale, and longing for further discussion...Frankel's work could well claim a place as a key text for analysis of archetype and the heroine.
- Mythprint

Frankel's truly global choiceof tales and her analysis of them is outstanding. It is a book to turn to fordeepening one's understanding of myths and stories about women and theirunderlying structures, or more personally to better understand one's ownjourney or the journeys of the women in one's life.- Mythlore

A fascinating and engaging explanation into the feminine journey and a real treasure of storytelling. It's at once academic in scope and yet accessible to the layman reader.

Move over, Joseph Campbell!
By Clara Stevenson
Finally, a book on the hero's journey when that hero's a woman! Ms. Frankel covers so many cultures I've never even heard of- Anatolia, Samoa, Xhosa, Ugarit, plus all the obvious Greek-Scottish-China-Germany fairytales and myths. It's a lot like Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces, but addresses women's issues like finding out you married a beast, overcoming child abuse to find your place in the world, and questing for a lost lover or child. The author covers all the steps from leaving home as a girl to becoming, you guessed it, a godddess! Then she starts all over and covers all the archetypes, like trickster, warrior, spirit, but again, all female. And it's all from literally hundreds of texts of heavily researched mythology. She has lots of resources and booklists at [...]as well. If you enjoy mythology but find all the hero quests a bit sexist, this is the book for you.

Brought Tears to My Eyes
By Alianna J. Maren
I had previously reviewed Valerie Frankel's related book, "Buffy and the Heroine's Journey." When I first received this "From Girl to Goddess," I had dug in with the same fervor - and found myself lost. It seemed more encyclopedic; more like a compendium than a book with discernible path and vision. (This despite its well-organized chapters and major sections.) I was committed to doing a review, yet it seemed hard to go beyond the "compendium" notion, citing the extensive and well-researched collection of women's folk stories and mythologies from around the world.

This morning, in the midst of thinking about how to help one of my new clients, my eye rested on this book and I picked it up.

It was so exactly what I needed!

I had been hard-pushing for some time. Every day - for over a month - had been task-focused. I had just written a blog post about male mentors of the "Obi-wan Kenobi" and "Yoda" sort, and had segued onto Sun Tzu's "The Art of War," translating the concepts for those launching an internet-based marketing campaign.

In short, despite having business that dominantly addresses the needs of women, I had been in a masculine mindset. I had been thinking in terms of being guided by masculine values.

My client (and somewhat surprisingly, my own self) needed to reconnect with core feminine wisdom.

I opened Frankel's book randomly, and read:

"As a teacher of independence, the evil stepmother is essential to the story. She's not only the antagonist; she also balances the far-too-generous fairy godmother or angelic absent mother."

This immediately answered one of my own questions: Why are there so few female correlates to the well-known male guides and gurus? Obi-wan Kenobi and Yoda ("Star Wars"), Mr. Miyagi ("The Karate Kid"), Professor Dumbledore (various Harry Potter books and movies), and even Don Diego de la Vega ("The Mask of Zorro) all play essential roles.

Why was there only the occasional, wish-granting fairy godmother as a guide for women?

Why was the "evil stepmother" so prevalent? What did it say about ourselves as women that we so consistently created this role in not only our fairy tales, but our current "romantic fiction" novels?

Frankel's identification of the stepmother as a "harsh tutor" - and the many stories which she uses to reinforce this point - is just one example of her illuminating genius.

Frankel does with suites of related stories what Joseph Campbell did in his epic "Hero with a Thousand Faces." Her task, though, has been more complex, and she's performed it with both penetrating insight and extensive research and documentation.

While Campbell addresses the young man's heroic journey, Frankel addresses the complexity of women's multiple and evolving journeys. While men do mature beyond their initial "heroic" stage (they themselves become mentors and guides), the feminine journey has minimally three stages (the well-understood Maiden, Mother, and Crone), to which Frankel adds the "New Moon: Spirit Guardian" - a stage well after becoming a wise Crone.

The challenge of women's journeying - throughout our life stages, and knowing and claiming the different aspects of who we are - is complex, difficult, and dangerous. Not all of us complete our full journeying. Few of us are able to tell the tales.

Yet by bringing together folktales and myths from throughout the world, and by insightfully grouping together those whose underlying myths communicates a singular core message, Frankel illumines core feminine processes.

In essence, Frankel takes feminine depth psychology to a profound new level.

This is a book to be cherished. Perhaps not to be read through, cover to cover, at just a few sittings. Rather, it serves as an insightful resource, a guide, when we seek answers to questions about ourselves.

Simply having it about - on the top of the table, not buried in the bookcase with so many others - is a great advantage.

This is a great "coffee table book" in the truest sense of the word. Or perhaps used as a "night table book." Or a book on the table near the desk, or in the kitchen. It's a great book to have about, so that as questions emerge, Frankel's deft interpretation of fairy tale's deep meanings can illumine our lives.

For Those Interested in Feminist and Jungian Perspectives of Woman in Myths and Folklore
By C. Raso
This was a fascinating book. The author uses Joseph Cambell, Jungian psychology, and other sources to dissect folklore, fairytales, and myths about heroines. She reveals to the reader the hidden truths about life in each story. The beginning of each chapter is a story that relates to the theme she is discussing. Frankel gives the title of the story and the country it originated in. As she discusses the theme, she brings in similar stories from other cultures. It is amazing how the same tale is told by different peoples thoughout the world. This is where Jung's idea of archetypes comes to play. We are all human beings with universal thoughts and emotions that appear in the stories we tell.

The book is divided into the three phases of a womans life; maiden, mother and crone. The maiden stories are about the journey from adolescence to adulthood. Some of these are the standard tales we hear as a child; Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty. In these tales the girl is fearful of what she will soon become, a wife and mother. She is tormented by an evil stepmother or witch and either sleeps through adolescence and wakens to a husband or goes through a trial to prove she is worthy of marriage. Maiden stories also include tales about women coming to terms with the shadow self or the darker more sexual side of there personality. These stories usually involve trips to the underworld where sacrifices are made and something is gained. Other maiden fables envolve finding the animus or male side of the personality that will complete them. The next stories are about motherhood. The author shows that mother's can be very different. Some are loving and sad when there child leaves as in the story of Demeter and Persephone. Other mothers can be jealous of the new woman in there son's life as shown in the tale of Cupid and Psyche. Some mothers can be vengeful as in the myth of Jason and Medea. The last stories are about the end years in the woman's life. In the crone stage the woman becomes the wise-woman and eventually initiates the cycle of death and rebirth.

In this review I have just scratched the surface of the knowledge that is conveyed by the author. Once you have read this book you will look at novels and movies in a whole different way. Eventhough this a book about the heroine's journey, some of the themes relate to the hero's journey as well. The most interesting themes are that of facing your shadow self and finding your animus or anima I read this book because of my interest in myths and fables. I recommend it to feminists and those interested in psychology, as well as readers who enjoy a good story.

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-8. Wade introduces a talented yet eccentric young woman whose brilliant explanation of Charles Babbage's analytical engine included a computer program and ideas for its use that even the inventor had not imagined. Lovelace, the wife of an English aristocrat and the daughter of poet Lord Byron, declined the traditional roles of housewife and mother, opting instead to pursue the study of mathematics. Wade recounts Lovelace's professional triumphs but is equally forthright concerning her personal problems, among them extreme mood swings, strange delusions, and compulsive gambling. Although the writing style is somewhat pedantic, the author's attention to sources and notes is commendable. A good choice for report writers or computer history buffs. Kay Weisman

Better Problem-Solving
By Monique Despres
By the time my students get to me, they've already learned the typical problem-solving strategies over and over. This book offers additional strategies that actually help them solve middle school problems. The presentation of the strategies is clear and engaging and there are multiple levels of practice problems for each strategy making it easy to meet the needs of varied learners. My students love learning these strategies, and I love the problem-solving power these strategies provide. In addition, the strategies presented will carry on far beyond a K-12 education. As someone with an advanced degree in mathematics, these are strategies I use regularly to solve problems. I appreciate the fact that I am giving students tools that they can use in more advanced mathematics classes. I highly recommend this book to supplement any middle school curriculum. I usually combine a lesson from this book with a selection from Zaccaro's The Ten Things All Future Mathematicians and Scientists Must Know (But are Rarely Taught).

Great book, an original story
By G. Pliler
This is not typically the type of book I would read, but I managed to read it through in a single day. It flows well, and the characters are very relatable. I have seen it described as a tear-jerker, which would make one assume it was a sad book, but its not.

A beautiful, heart-warming story about a father and son
By Whispering Stories Book Blog
Eight year old Sam is autistic. After years of drifting apart, his mum Jody, as his dad Alex, decide to part company, with Alex being the one to leave the family home.

Alex is in his thirties, and is now living in his friend Dan’s spare room. To top it all off, he has just been made redundant. He has a strained relationship with his son, as he doesn’t understand him, nor know how to communicate with him. He even finds it too much to take his son to the park.

When Sam is given a games console by his mum, Alex isn’t very happy with his wife, but over time he learns that through the power of Minecraft, he can start to understand, and learn to communicate with his son.

Being the mother of a thirteen year old autistic child, though not quite as severe as Sam, I could understand what life was like for his mum and dad, alongside having an understanding of how Sam worked too.

Dad Alex doesn’t feel equipped to be able to raise a child with autism. He doesn’t quite understand that children with autism see the world differently, most often in High Definition with the sound turned up. You get the feeling that he is quite scared of his son, especially being on his own with him. I’ve seen this scenario over and over with a few parents. They get frustrated, often not with the child, but with themselves as they feel that they don’t know how to cope.

Mum Jody worships her son, and does everything she can to be there for him, help him, and truly understand him. She finally gets to the end of her tether with her husband. Not only are they growing apart, but his attitude towards Sam is pushing her away. She clearly loves Alex very much, but something had to give and that meant asking Alex to leave.

One thing that I find a vast majority of autistic children love, certainly the ones that I know, is electronic games, whether that be an iPad, games console or computer. They seem to be able to connect with the virtual world a lot better than they do with the real world, so when Alex found an in-road to his son through Minecraft, I wasn’t surprised.

I found that the book had a natural and easy flow to it, and you find yourself getting lost in the life of a father and son. I actually didn’t realise at first that it wasn’t a memoir, but a fictional story. This is how realistic Keith Stuart’s writing is.The story will have you working out, emotion-wise. One minute you will be laughing and feeling happy, the next you may as well let the tears flow as sadness creeps in.

This is a beautiful, heart-warming story about a father and son, and how Minecraft became the joining bridge between them.

A book full of insight, warmth, love, honesty, laughter and tears.
By Jill's Book Cafe
This book is inspired by the author's own experiences with his autistic son, which helps to make this a realistic and heartfelt novel about love and acceptance.

Alex has always struggled to come to terms with his son's autism but his failure and frustration has also resulted in damaging his relationship with his wife. The tension between the two, has a detrimental effect on Sam, which of course creates a vicious circle. The answer, is to ask Alex to leave which he reluctantly does, moving in with his childhood friend. What follows is an attempt to understand what went wrong and how, if possible, he can put it right. The problem is complicated by the fact that in order to love others, you have to love yourself, and Alex's problem goes back much further to the loss of his brother George.

The breakthrough comes, when Sam discovers Minecraft, which results in the opportunity to have a shared activity which Alex uses to build not just an imaginary world, but a sometimes fragile, but growing, real life relationship. As their relationship develops, so too does Alex's awareness of what is actually required from him and how he's been falling woefully short. The question is, is it too little, too late or is there a future not just for him and Sam, but also for his marriage to Jody.

I adored this book, and I will admit I didn't originally expect too. A story about a family falling apart and an obsession with a computer game, didn't immediately sell itself too me. However having seen the reviews my interest was piqued and all I can say, is that if you have similar misgivings, cast them aside - now. This is a beautifully written, heartwarming book about a father developing a relationship with his son. While this relationship has obviously been hampered by the very real complications brought about by his son's autism, it still identifies very real life lessons that are applicable to any relationship.

Alex is not always a sympathetic character, initially I just wanted to shout at him for his apparent selfishness, but as we begin to appreciate his back story, he's easier to understand and warm to. His inability to bond with Sam, while perhaps understandable is also not just about Sam's autism. The reality is that bringing up any child can be hard, but while Sam's autism perhaps makes it harder for Alex, I wonder whether Alex uses it as an excuse to avoid getting involved. It's only as a fragile bridge is built that Alex recognises it isn't about what he wants, but what Sam needs.

The character that undoubtedly stole my heart was Sam. I can't begin to understand what it's like to live with autism, and as each person may be on a different place on the spectrum, this book gives you just a glimpse of what it's like for Sam. Needless to say, I just wanted him to be happy, to find a way for him to be comfortable in his skin, and to find a way to make friends and build relationships that will enable him to move forward in life. These are life skills, which all children have to learn, but most do it without being hampered by a condition that makes you scared of the world, of noise, of physical contact and of rules that everyone seems to understand but you. If nothing else I would hope this book makes us less judgemental of things we don't understand and more understanding.

The book offers a very touching and insightful in to what it means to live with an autistic child, but it isn't all tears and tantrums. There's a lot of warmth, humour and a surprising discovery that Minecraft isn't just a nerdy computer game. As well as following Alex and Sam on their journey of discovery, we also get to meet and Alex's friend Dan, his sister Emma and his Mum. They all have their own cameo roles to play in helping Alex understand himself and add an extra layer to the story that makes a fuller, richer read.

In short, this is book full of insight, warmth, love, honesty, laughter and tears. It has lessons for us all about building relationships, about accepting ourselves and others and for being thankful for family and friends.

I received an ecopy of this book via NetGalley to review.

Getting over Getting Older, by Letty Cottin Pogrebin

"My feminist sisters . . . counsel women to welcome age", writes award-winning author and founder of "Ms". magazine Letty Cottin Pogrebin. "They discern nobility and power in the elder female. So do I, but I'm not in a hurry to "be" one. I hated turning 50, it's as simple as that". With a winning combination of insight and emotional honesty, she shatters myths about everything from menopause to monogamy--and offers women a new, mindful perspective on the middle chapters of their lives.

Amazon.com Review
Not everyone--not even every feminist--holds to the belief that age brings wisdom, power, and its own beauty. Faced with turning 50, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, founder of Ms. and author of several books including Growing Up Free, says her reactions ranged "from astonishment to anger, from confusion to curiosity, from denial to disgust." Using herself as a compass and adding many other well- known voices, Pogrebin's irreverent book takes on friendship, sex, love, dieting, mothering adults, the physical and emotional depredations of aging, and mortality. Rather than stubbornly toeing the line on spurning plastic surgery, for example, she thoughtfully explores "the tension between artificiality and authenticity." In the end, she concludes, one can devote one's remaining years to lamenting and running after lost youth or put that time to far better uses. Despite a glib, overly playful tone that trivializes certain issues, Pogrebin's desire to share downplayed truths is a boon.

From Publishers Weekly
Pogrebin (Deborah, Golda and Me), a founding editor of Ms magazine, is the latest baby boomer to weigh in with her thoughts on what turning 50 means to a woman. In anecdotes that range from humorous and insightful to occasionally tedious and self-indulgent, drawn from her own experiences and from the lives of friends, the 55-year-old Pogrebin ruminates on the pros and cons of aging. According to the author, the loss of a youthful appearance and a decrease in energy are offset by the freedom that comes when child-rearing ends. Age, she says, can also bring a heightened sense of living in the now. Of particular interest is an account of Pogrebin's emotional turmoil when she had to have a needle biopsy after a suspicious mammogram reading. Although much of her advice for coping with midlife, such as the benefits of discovering solitude, is useful, certain suggestions like living well and traveling are available only to the financially secure. I read this book years ago when I turned 50 and it was very helpful. I bought this as a gift from someone's 50th birthday but the condition of the book was not as expected so I returned it.

Superficial
By C. Lacher
Maybe I didn't enjoy this so much because I am only 45 and, therefore, a good 15 years younger than the author. That makes us of different generations making her personal anecdotes difficult to relate to. In addition, I don't have a great career, I'm not married, I don't live in a large metropolitan & cosmopolitan area, I don't have a group of fabulous girlfriends to drink wine and compare stories with, and I don't have kids (and likely never will) so again, I found a lot to not bond about with the author.
The opening chapter, however, was wonderful and had me howling in my chair. I hoped that fun would be maintained throughout the book. Instead, I felt the book spent too much time talking about superficial aspects of aging like eating right, exercising, and keeping your mind alert by trying new things (well, duh!). She also completely overlooks the more spiritual aspects of mortality in favor of political discussions about women in society (important but not what I'm needing right now). There was a rather graphic description of a breast bioposy which was riveting (the author holds nothing back there and thank you for that) Maybe in another five years I'll connect better instead of finding this to read very much like an irritating upbeat "how-to-be a glowing senior citizen article" out of Good Housekeeping Magazine. For now, I'd recommend Awakening at Midlife by Kathleen Brehony.

The lady doth protest too much
By Delin Colon
While I had adjustments to make when I came into my 50's, this book didn't really help, as Pogrebin was far more freaked out than I was about aging, and seems to spend the book convincing herself that it's ok. I wasn't concerned with a lot of the superficial stuff with regard to aging... looks, weight, etc. So it was more the spiritual and existential aspects of life that interested me. But, even up to the end of the book, it sounded to me like a frantic effort to make herself comfortable with the aging process. Letty's mother-in-law (my nursery school teacher), Esther Pogrebin, was a true feminist who was always comfortable in her own skin and freaked out by very little - now, she could have written a terrific book on aging.
