The future of Christianity in America looks a little brighter

Gabe Lyon brings into clear focus the mountains that modern Christians will need to move if they are to avoid being altogether cast from serious public consideration.
In his book, The Next Christians: The Good News About the End of Christian America first accurately diagnoses the problem facing Christianity in America and then offers an excellent 10-point outline of characteristics that are common of the Christians he believes, and rightly in my estimation, are going to be the best bet in turning that tide.
Many reviewers of Gabe's book seem to get hung up on the opening line of the book where Gabe makes the case that it is often socially awkward if not downright embarrassing to be identified as a Christian in America. I wonder if these reviewers have had many lunch encounters like I have. There we are, sitting around the table laughing and cutting up and generally having a good time and then someone goes and makes a comment to the effect of "oh come on guys, its not like ANYONE believes ________ anymore". You can fill in that blank with just about any Christian position but the one that I've seen most frequently cited is intelligent design which is commonly confused by non-Christians as merely an alias of young earth creationism.
I mention that not to take a pot shot at YEC but rather to demonstrate the insight found in Gabe's conclusion that things are rapidly changing and we, Christians, must adapt to the prevailing social landscape.
After outlining the cultural shifts that face us, Gabe tells the story of meeting with a Hollywood movie producer who, after noticing the success of Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ, wanted to gain some insight into the Christian market. As a side note, I wonder if this meeting, with Lionsgate executives, is what influenced to brought about the movie "The Book of Eli".
Gabe describes to them, and us, two major groups and their immediate subgroups. They are:
*Separatists
**Insiders
**Culture Warriors
**Evangelizers
*Cultural
**Blenders
**Philanthropists
Gabe outlines each group and what characteristics differentiate them from the rest. This grid is valuable and might be worth the price of the book by itself. As some reviewers have noted, The Next Christians is a further contribution to the Christ and Culture series started by H. Richard Niebuhr's "Christ and Culture", and then Craig Carter's "Rethinking Christ and Culture", which are great if you want further reading on how Christians relate to the culture they're in.
At the end of this section Gabe introduces a third overall archetype of Christian which is the main focus of his book, The Next Christians. Overall we can classify these Christians as "restorers". Christians who aren't interested in either separation or immersion in culture. They are, in short, culture makers. Subversive agents who seek to use culture where appropriate and transform it gradually to be more Christlike.
Gabe shares numerous anecdotes to illustrate his points. Gabe introduces us to ministries like "To Write Love on Her Arms" which gives a good example of how the Next Christians are characterized by rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty in the brokenness in the world. This isn't altogether different than how Jesus, his earliest disciples, and many Christians throughout the ages have approaches the cultures in which they live.
Throughout the book Gabe gives good examples of how Christians should tactfully engage the world around them. Navigating the current cultural current by not being too abrasive nor being too complicit. But allowing Christ to work in them to transform hearts and minds.
To that end I was thrilled when Gabe made the observation that the next Christians are people who see every aspect of their lives as sacred. A great example Gabe gave on this point is a couple who moved out to California from the south and decided that since no Christian community existed where they moved that they would create one.
I believe Gabe hits the nail on the head when he writes about how the Next Christians are not interested so much in inviting their friends to church to sit through an event. Not that doing so is horrible per se. But the Next Christians are more interested in bringing Christ to the culture around them. Of being the church in the world.
Overall I found Gabe's book to be a blessing. It is encouraging to hear how Christians are recognizing the changing landscape, are planning ways to deliberately confront the culture in more winsome ways, and finally, how they are throwing off the shackles of unbiblical traditions which have been dragging us down for quite a while now.
The Next Christians serves as a great field map to help us keep our cultural interface in check so we can more effectively engage with people around us.
And for anyone looking for encouragement about the future of Christianity in America, his book provides it in spades.

Next Christians has some needed Next Steps

The Next Christians by Gabe Lyons, unfortunately, does not stand up to the quality of the first, major work he produced - unChristian. This book starts off with a bang as he introduces his idea and begins to lay the foundation for the dual choices he presents later. He goes back to that first book and reproduces some of the research on the world's perspectives of Christians. He does provide a harrowing forecast for Christianity in our modern times because, for the most part, Christians have disengaged.
After his opening chapters, he presents a contrast between what "next Christians" (whom he calls "restorers") should be doing rather than what they are currently doing. Those actions are: (1) provoked, not offended; (2) creators, not critics; (3) called, not employed; (4) grounded, not distracted; (5) in community, not alone; (6) civil, not divisive; and (7) countercultural, not relevant. It is here, within these discussions, that Lyons' work reveals signs of weakness. I do realize that big name individuals have endorsed his manuscript; however, I hope to clearly outline my objections with opinion and analysis of his arguments.
Before I go on, I highly recommend that anyone struggling with questions of God's will and their current workplace read chapter 7 very carefully. In my mind, this was the strongest chapter of the book that provided a cogent analysis of our situation. We cannot continue to separate our current occupations from "real ministry" that God has provided. As Lyons says, "work provides the only real contact many Christians have with outsiders" (p 109). That reality is a sad one that must be changed. We cannot be lights in this world (Matthew 5:16) without being in the world.
My major problem begins with his early chapters as he describes the differences between "separatists" and "cultural." He advocates for a more middle ground and wants "next Christians" to be "restorers." These individuals take both extremes, merge them together, and make Christianity relevant in our pluralistic and relativistic society. While that sounds great, Lyons seems to be reacting to his stringent upbringing. For instance, he readily and perpetually acknowledges that he grew up in a separatist home and all of his examples swing to the "restorer" or even "cultural" side.
In one of his examples for a restorer, he concedes that the positive example may have made "unjustifiable compromise" and that separatist concerns may be "valid" (p 88). Those very statements undercut his argument for this individual being a restorer. Remember, restorers are the middle ground; however, that example seems to indicate Lyons advocates for more cultural solutions instead of those advanced by separatists. Maybe I am reading too much into this particular example, but it fits the pattern that his personal pendulum may have swung from separatist to cultural.
Another issue that I noted is with chapter 6 - Creators, not Critics. This chapter was incoherent, weak, and thoroughly disappointing. He opens with the mention of some cultural magazine named Paste that is supposedly run by two Christians. Other than discussing the topics covered by this print media, he makes no case for how this periodical creates beauty and advances the cause of Christ. Throughout, he uses esoteric terms like beauty and common good but never truly connect them to our purpose in life - glorify God as we live in the redemptive grace He alone provides.
Lyons own example in this chapter 6 creates major problems with this theory. For instance, in detailing the appeal of Paste, he noted they created culture "not by censoring music with questionable lyrics" (p 91). So, this cultural journal glorifies God by including and discussing material that a holy God may consider offensive? Lyons omitted completely any reference to Psalm 101:3 (NIV) that says: "I will set before my eyes no vile thing." He also fails to consider the implications of Philippians 4:8 (NIV): "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." I cannot know the mind of God, but would questionable lyrics fit the principles advanced in either of those two verses?
My overarching issue with the work is its structure. Christians are to be followers of Jesus; and as a follower of Jesus, I should be consumed by study of His word. Lyons utilizes snippets of Scripture here and there to bolster one of his points. Instead, I wish he would have stated specific Biblical examples and then peppered in the modern, human examples that match the Word of God. For instance, he mentions that Zacchaeus was changed by Jesus and not instructed to change his occupation. Rather, Jesus told him to live as an example within his profession. Where was the detailed analysis of that entire scene that could have bolstered his argument? It was missing other than a few, random lines.
There are some good qualities in this read - like the chapter on employment - and the last several contrasts are quite wonderful. Chapters 7, 8, 10, and 11 are highly relevant and authentic for us to consider. At times, Lyons has a tremendous ability to turn a wonderful phrase. At the end of chapter 6, which I have already unpacked, Lyons has two SUPERB paragraphs. While those thoughts stick with you, the examples he selects detract from them. If I can spend as much time as I did in pointing out my issues of this chapter while having positive things to say about the rest, my suggestion is simple: either rewrite chapter 6 or throw it out altogether.
Despite my reservations, I think it is worth a read to find some of those buried nuggets.

This Book Can Save "Christians"

This book by Gabe Lyons is an immediate answer for many types of Christians who need to understand their calling in life with God's desire to restore the world. Gabe presents the "other half" of the Gospel that has been easily missed by many in the Church, which has resulted in its impact being missed in the world. This fuller understanding of the Gospel brings the responsibility of Jesus' words to work in restoring the earth until it looks like heaven. This book can free others to be a part of God's restoration process in our world today.
Gabe does a great job explaining the different sections of fractured Christian communities, from those who withdraw from culture, to those who are shaped by culture, to those who restore it. He ultimately lays the foundation for the "Next Christians", who he also calls "Restorers". Restorers are recovering the integrity of the term "Christian" by their lifestyle and words. They restore the integrity that has been lost by "Christians" who do little to nothing to restore the earth, while criticizing and judging the culture. Gabe shows how these "Next Christians" think and live differently, as they work to restore culture and the lives of others. These Restorers don't just talk of the world's problems; they seek and find answers.
In my title I said that this book would save Christians. "Salvation", in the Greek means, "saved, healed and delivered." This book can give Christians understanding that will "save" them from their miss-guided understanding of God's will and heart for the earth and its people. It can "heal" Christians from all the self-inflicted wounds created by their judgment and criticism of world, while leading them to understand how to create and transform culture. Lastly, this book can deliver people from the hopeless lies that they are unworthy or unable to transform the world with God.
In closing, this book does a great job of giving the reader real life examples of Restorers, while giving simple tips on how these Next Christians stay grounded in Christ. I highly recommend this book to help others understand exactly what God is doing in our day which also invites you to be a part of this larger story. May our cities continue to be transformed by the restorers of the earth, which are becoming leaders of culture, not followers.
