About the Author
Terry Waltz is a NYS-certified teacher of Mandarin Chinese and a nationally-recognized presenter on teaching Chinese through TPRS and Comprehensible Input methodologies. She is the author of a series of readers for emergent readers of Chinese and the creator of the TOP (Tonally Orthographic Pinyin) system of tonal spelling. A qualified conference interpreter, Dr. Waltz lived in Taiwan for a decade, where she earned her MA in Conference Interpreting at Fujen University and taught languages and interpreting at schools and government agencies around the island. She now lives in upstate New York, dividing her time between writing TPRS-friendly Chinese materials, developing educational games for the Squid For Brains, and continuing her longtime interpreting and translation practice in Mandarin and Spanish.

Accessible to the first year student

This 'chapter book' is simply a 45 page story split up into 13 chapters. It has the simplified characters on one page followed by the pinyin overleaf. The clever thing about this book is that it doesn't contain an English translation, and yet is readable by a beginning learner with relatively little effort. It doesn't need to give an English translation to be comprehensible because of the way it is written:
* It uses simple grammar throughout, and no idioms, so that literal translation of words can be understood with fairly little effort
* The number of distinct words used is very small, especially in the early chapters.
* In rare cases where a word or character is unfamiliar, it can be referenced to a short glossary through the pinyin
* All proper nouns are written directly in English (mixed in with the hanzi characters)
* Especially in the early chapters there is a heavy use of repetition. As in a children's book, this reduces the strain of reading the average sentence, making it a lot easier to get into it.
I give this book five stars because I love it. And I love this book as a beginning student because it makes me think that I am making progress and that I can actually read a real book (well, almost real) in Chinese. The glossary contains about 400 words, and I don't think that there's anything in the story not keyed in the glossary, but since it's rarely necessary to refer to that glossary while reading, this book felt very much like reading in Chinese.
So I give five stars for the way that this book is structured, its organization, and the clarity of its print and layout (and mostly for the thrilling sense I had in reading it that I was actually able to read a foreign language). I do not give five stars for its literary content, although the story in this book is weird and interesting. The level of vocabulary and grammar is about what you'd find in a book for the early reader, but it doesn't have the anodyne story I expected from its learn-to-read format. In the first few chapters it appears that this will be the ordinary story of a petulant tween and how she overcomes her minor problems with homework, but there's a big twist in the fifth chapter which sends the narrative off into a sort of fever dream (if it is a dream, she doesn't wake up from it by the last page - but I honestly thought that this was where the story was headed).

Great for beginners

I have sort of a love-hate relationship with this book. I previously read Anna Mei Banfa!: A Short Novel In Simple Chinese: Characters And Pinyin (Chinese Edition) which is identical in format and the story is similar: A young girl, unhappy about her predicament in life and her journey. Except I hated the actual story. That being said, I could easily read & understand most of the story easily. The way the story is written is basically all in Chinese characters on the front page, without translating words that don't add any real value to the learner's Chinese vocabulary (Like the English names of the characters, place names, & the hilarious parodies of consumer products -- Weeee, ePhone & Burger Duke being a few.) On the back of that page is the transliteration of those characters into Pinyin. There's a glossary in the back of the book for words that may be unfamiliar ("dog sled" being the most memorable) and also grammatical explanations. The author uses repetition of words, phrases & ideas that reinforces vocabulary & grammar. This is both extremely helpful and occasionally annoying, but you get used to it. The story is probably something that if written purely for native readers would be applied for maybe 2nd or 3rd grade readers. But that helps make it so easily readable for new learners. The story can't be too complicated which makes it frustrating at times. That being said, I was happy I could read it so easily and I read it till the very last page. This isn't a book you'll hold onto & want to read again, but it's good to keep up what you've learned and then lend to someone you know who's just starting out.

My fourth grade son loved this book

My fourth grade son is in a Mandarin immersion program and he absolutely loved this book. The book was funny and not too difficult, there was only a single word he didn't already know. He brought the book to school several times to share with classmates and his teacher. This is the best book I have found so far for him - much more fun than picture books, but not too difficult. I wish this author had written more - we have her other novel Anna mei banfa. Would highly recommend this book to any parent with a child in a Mandarin immersion program.
